The UT ePortfolio contains a peer review option. Student instructions are available in three short videos. At the bottom of this page, you will also find a diagram that explains the workflow.

Video #1: Introduction and creating a product

This video explains the process and demonstrates how a student can prepare and submit a product for peer review.

Video #2: Peer review and evaluation

The student and peer reviewer are displayed side by side to demonstrate how the product moves through the process. This video also contains the step of peer review evaluation.

Video #3: Process after peer review

The examiner can edit the student grades and may return the work for a final version. This video displays the possible options for this part of the peer review process.

The flowchart below illustrates the workflow (click the image for a larger version). Below are some explanations of the steps in this process.





Student submits product

The student creates a product just like any UT ePortfolio assignment. Because the assignment was set to ‘Peer review’, they receive a button to ‘Send to peer reviewer’. This is an anonymous process so they cannot choose a reviewer by name.


Which attempt?

Only the first attempt goes to peer review.


Student submits to peer reviewer

The peer review distribution happens either at a pre-set date/time, or by manual action. Only students who have entered a product are included in the peer review pool. The examiner can unassign students in case of illness etc. The coordinator can follow the different stages in the status overview.


Peer reviewer submits review

The coordinator has entered a rubric that students use to assess the work. It generates a pass or fail. Peer reviewers also have to enter comments. The peer reviewer does not know whether the review resulted in a pass or fail.


Student enters peer review feedback

The student receives the comments from his/her peer reviewer. They do not see whether they received a pass or fail, just the rubric and comments. They give a 1-5 star assessment and write an evaluation of the peer review.


System: Product, grade & reviews submitted to examiner

Once the peer review evaluation has been submitted, the examiner receives the whole package in Products to grade.


Review (some) products / reviews, adjust grades

The examiner has the option to spot check the students’ work. A pass can be changed to a fail and vice versa.


Process complete or final version needed?

The system is set up to handle two scenarios: peer review only, or peer review as a first step, followed by a final version to the examiner.


Examiner sends out grades

In case of the first scenario, the assignment was just for the students to grade each other. The examiner will now send out the grades.



Students who passed are done, but students who failed will need to resubmit a revised product.


Return without grading

A second scenario is that students need to submit a final version to the examiner, incorporating the feedback from their peer. In this case the examiner returns all products without grading. All students receive the assignment back in their inbox, with review and initial pass/fail visible to them (but not the name of the reviewer, as the entire process is anonymous).


Student submits to examiner

When the system detects that this is a second (or higher) attempt, the product is routed straight to the examiner.


Examiner grades product

For second (or higher) attempts, the examiner receives the products for grading just like any other UT ePortfolio assignment.



The process is complete.
