Curious what an EngD is like in practice? Our trainees and alumni share why they chose the University of Twente, what their design projects involve, and how the programme has shaped their careers. Read their stories to see if an EngD is the right next step for you.
Donika Xhani | EngD BIT
Donika is following an EngD in Business and IT with Apollo Tyres R&D. Her design project develops an operational ontology for the tyre domain to support explainable AI.
Fatemeh Mahmoudi | EngD Civil Engineering (Alumnus)
Fatemeh completed an EngD in Civil Engineering with Fiber4all. Her design project developed a safer ground piercing method for fibre to the home installation that reduces the risk of striking existing underground utilities.
Niels Vossebeld | EngD Civil Engineering (Alumnus)
Niels completed an EngD in Civil Engineering. His story highlights the tailor made character of the programme, the freedom of choice for all parties, and the shorter route compared to a PhD.
Marzieh Salehi | EngD Energy & Process Technology (Alumnus)
Marzieh completed an EngD in Energy and Process Technology. Her design project developed a laboratory method and equipment to measure dry grip for tyres, starting from the LAT100 machine, to achieve a strong correlation with on-road performance.
Andre Louis | EngD Energy & Process Technology (Alumnus)
Andre completed an EngD in Energy and Process Technology. His story describes a smooth transition from student to engineer, with close supervision at the university and regular collaboration with a company.
Monique van Kempen | EngD Maintenance (Alumnus)
Monique completed an EngD in Maintenance with Daimler. Her project improved how model maintenance is carried out in a complex automotive production line with many vehicle variants at the Bremen plant.
Paul Bakker | EngD Robotics
Paul is following a part-time EngD in Robotics in collaboration with a company. The design project focuses on a ball-balancing platform steered by three omni wheels.
Ivor Wanders | EngD Robotics (Alumnus)
Ivor completed an EngD in Robotics at the company Schuitemaker. His project focused on Innovado, an autonomous feeding vehicle for farms that uses onboard sensors instead of GPS and transponders for navigation.
Jan de Jong | EngD Robotics (Alumnus)
Jan completed an EngD in Robotics. His design started in his master’s project and was further developed during the programme to a professional level for industry. His story highlights the practical nature of the EngD and the way it builds real design capability.
