The University of Twente offers a variety of services to help you settle in at the university as comfortably as possible. In addition to the pick-up service at the airport, the university's introduction period (Kick-In) and the Buddy programme, we can mediate for furnished accommodation on your behalf, we will arrange your visa, and we will help you with all necessary formalities upon arrival.

International Student Handbook

The International Student Handbook tells you everything you need to know about the University of Twente, Enschede, and The Netherlands. Not only will the handbook provide you with 'need to know' information like admission deadlines and support services, it will also tell you more about our international student associations, the Dutch culture, day trips in the Netherlands, and useful Dutch words to use during your first shopping trip.

Cost of living

The following student budget is meant as an indication of the budget required annually when studying at the University of Twente. Please note that tuition fees are not included in this budget.


The total cost of living is € 9.500 - €10.500 per year, excluding tuition fees. The following costs are included in this budget:

  • Housing: €5.000
  • Books & supplies: €500
  • Bank account: €50
  • Food: €2.500
  • Transportation: €600
  • Other (clothing etc.): €800
  • Bicycle: €125
  • Insurance (optional for EU/EEA students (*)): €480
  • Entry visa / residence permit (Non-EU/EEA students only): €192
  • Some study programs require extra study material, possibly a laptop

(*) Insurance costs for EU/EEA students depend on policies of insurance companies in home country. EU/EEA students can opt for additional insurance of €10-€25 per month. This insurance covers costs of medical care, liability, household contents and luggage, legal aid and extra costs. Please contact International Office for more information.

Please note: Students in need of visa are required to prove they posses sufficient financial resources (€ 11.000) in order to pay for living in the Netherlands themselves. Pick-up Service & University introduction

To make your arrival in the Netherlands as comfortable as possible, the University of Twente offers a pick-up service prior to the start of the University's introduction period (called the 'Kick-In').

Pick-up service

When you arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, you can use the UT airport pick-up service. In close cooperation with the organising committee of the Kick-In and the Erasmus Student Network, the UT will pick you up at the airport and will join you on your way to Enschede. Would you like to make use of this service? Keep close track of the communication from the Kick-In organising committee to sign up for the service.

Coming to Enschede without using the pick-up service? No problem! But make sure you plan your journey ahead of your arrival on 9292ov.

University Introduction (Kick-In)

The Kick-In is the University's introduction for all new UT students. During the introduction, you will meet your fellow students and get to know Enschede and the UT campus. The UT will also help you arrange formalities like formal university registration and first steps towards registration at the municipality of Enschede during the facility market.

Buddy Programme

The Buddy Programme is an initiative to help international students adjust to their new home. Dutch students from various faculties can volunteer to become a buddy of new international students togive them a warm welcome to the University of Twente and the Netherlands. Housing / accommodation, Visa & Insurances


The University of Twente (UT) is the linking pin between local housing providers and admitted international UT students, employees, and guests. Our Housing Officers mediate for furnished on- and off-campus accommodation on behalf of three local housing providers: de Veste, Stadsweide, and the ITC International Hotel. We will do its best to find suitable accommodation for you, however, no guarantees can be given due to the limited availability of accommodation.

Visa / Residence Permit

By Dutch law students cannot apply for a visa themselves. The UT coordinates all applications and extensions for (entry) visas, residence permits and Change of Purposes for on-campus Bachelor, Master and Exchange students. Students from the off-campus faculty ITC, will be assisted by the ITC faculty, whereas PhD students will be assisted by our Office Foreign Employees.

If you require an entry visa or residence permit you will be contacted by email outlining all necessary procedures. Provided you supply all necessary documents in time, the entire application procedure will take about 2 months.More information about this procedure can be found on the Visa website
