UT develops guidelines for responsible use of AI in research Feedback invited

Thursday 3 September 2026

The S&P department has developed draft guidelines to support researchers in the responsible use of AI throughout the research process. As AI is significantly impacting how research is conducted, it creates new opportunities and introduces risks to research integrity, ethics, data protection, copyright, and transparency.

The guidelines provide practical recommendations for researchers who use AI tools at different stages of their research process, including research design, literature review, data analysis, coding, and writing. The recommendations address key principles, including researcher accountability, human oversight, output verification, data protection, research ethics, transparency, and the responsible selection of AI tools.

An initial consultation has been carried out with the relevant stakeholders. The draft guidelines are now available for the UT community to review and provide feedback, comments, or suggestions for improvement.

We invite you to share your feedback by 29 September via the following form:

Feedback on the Guidelines for Responsible Use of AI in Research – Fill out form

The feedback received will be reviewed and incorporated where appropriate. The revised guidelines will then be submitted to the University Council for consent.

As AI technologies and their applications in research continue to evolve, the guidelines are intended to be a living document that will be reviewed and updated as needed.
