[update 6 May, 12:30]
The University of Twente has taken note of reports published on 4 May regarding a data breach at Instructure, the provider of the Canvas learning platform. This concerns a security incident in which user data may have been compromised worldwide. Instructure has confirmed that UT has also been affected. We understand that this may raise questions. Below is an update based on the information currently available.
Uncertainty about impact; no sensitive data leaked
At present, it is not yet clear whether, and to what extent, data of Canvas users at the University of Twente has actually been affected. The UT does not register dates of birth, identification documents or bank details in Canvas. This means that such data could not have been compromised (unless users shared it themselves via the inbox messages). Based on current information, the worst-case scenario involves basic data such as names, email addresses, and possibly Canvas IDs or student and staff numbers, as well as potentially messages sent within Canvas.
Instructure has implemented additional security measures, and the University of Twente has taken further steps to protect data, such as renewing access keys and increasing monitoring. Canvas can continue to be used as normal. The University of Twente is also in close contact with other educational institutions and is actively monitoring the situation.
More information
As soon as more clarity or relevant information for students and staff becomes available, the University of Twente will communicate this via announcements on Canvas and the UT Portal.
If you have any questions about the current situation, you can contact the LISA helpdesk (UT’s IT department).
