Now Open: New Contemplation and Silence rooms in the Vrijhof

We are delighted to announce that the new Contemplation and Silence Rooms on the 5th floor of the Vrijhof are now open for use by our entire university community.

These rooms have been thoughtfully designed to offer everyone a place to pause, reflect, pray, meditate or simply be in silence. In the heart of our vibrant campus, they provide a peaceful retreat – a moment to slow down, recharge, and reconnect.

The creation of these rooms has been a truly collaborative process, shaped through conversations with students, employees, and community members. Together, we’ve designed spaces that reflect a wide range of needs, perspectives, and traditions.

What began as the idea of one shared room evolved into two distinct yet complementary spaces

• A Contemplation Room for reflection and prayer
• A Silence Room for stillness, meditation and calm.

Together, they represent the diversity of our community and our collective wish for connection and well-being.

It wasn’t always an easy journey. Designing these types of spaces touches on deeply personal experiences and emotions. Yet through open dialogue and mutual respect, we’ve built something that represents our shared values of openness, respect and inclusivity.

A space that reflects who we are as a university: open, diverse, and welcoming to everyone,” said Vice President Machteld Roos during the opening. “I want to thank everyone who contributed to this thoughtful and collaborative process, for your trust, your respectful input, and for being a part of this shared journey.”

Although a few finishing touches are still to come, the rooms are now open for everyone to visit and use. We warmly invite you to come by, explore the spaces, and take a moment for yourself.
