Searching for Grants (with Research Professional)

Research Professional is a comprehensive funding Opportunities database

The research professional database features an easy-to-use interface and powerful searching and customisation tools that are designed to assist you in your search for (research) funding.

We are all increasingly aware of the importance of knowing about new funding opportunities and this service provides researchersstudents and staff with:

  • a searchable database of national and international funding opportunities
  • news from the research world and funding bodies
  • access to discussion forums

You can view all of the content, including some pre-made searches, without registering or logging in by using the Campus Access option, however, this will not allow you to save or access any saved searches.

To manage your searches more effectively, you need to open a personal account. Registration for a personal account is free and takes about 1 minute to complete. To do this, use a computer within the University network and go to, click on 'Self-registration' and complete the form using your email address.

A personal account allows you to:

  • use the database from any computer – your office, home or anywhere else if you are travelling
  • create customised email alerts that will bring funding opportunities to your mailbox
  • save the results of your searches and re-run them
  • store interesting funding opportunities, add notes and share information with colleagues

The most useful function is likely to be the Funding Search function where you can search the online funding repository for opportunities.

To set up a search, use the dropdown boxes to select the criteria you wish to search by (such as the name of the discipline, funder or the award type). You can use the plus button to add extra criteria, and the minus button to remove them. When you have built a search you are happy with, click the ‘Search' button and the results will be displayed.

Funding opportunities with any internal deadlines or useful application notes are indicated by a ‘flag' in the right-hand side of the opportunity detailing the annotation (deadline, note, contact or priority).

You can receive weekly email alerts on any of your saved searches (funding or news) by adding any searches that you would like to be alerted to in your alerts profile. To access this simply click on the ‘Alerts' button on the top right of the screen.

You can attend a workshop on campus organized by one of the UT information specialists or you can choose to participate in an "Online training broadcast", where you will learn to use Research Professional. Each session takes one hour. The campus workshops target specific groups (students, PhD’s, first time users, advanced users, etc.) and take place from 12.30 – 13.30. For alle courses see

The online sessions are conducted on the fourth Tuesday of each month between 11.00 and 12.00.
