Can I use Zoom for video conferencing?

Short answer (explanation below): The UT does not allow the use of Zoom due to privacy and security implications. See a list of conference tools you can use under FAQ "What tools can I use for online lectures and / or video conferences?"

Explanation: Using Zoom has a number of consequences for privacy and security. Personal information is shared with third parties without the express consent of the users. Security investigations have also identified a number of serious vulnerabilities that could open your system and that of your viewers to attacks.

If you are invited to a Zoom meeting by an external party and it is not possible to use an alternative, please observe the following guidelines:

  • Open an incognito or privacy window for the Zoom meeting and set the cookie settings in your browser to minimum / necessary;
  • Do not share a screen with Zoom;
  • Do not share files via Zoom;
  • Do not download files that are shared;
  • Do not record Zoom meetings;
  • Ask the Zoom meeting host to set a password and only share it with those who are invited to participate;
  • Ask the host not to enable the "Attendee Attention Tracking" feature;
  • Set audio and video to "mute" by default; do not enable it until you participate in the meeting.

Do you have any Tips for working @home?

Bring your headset.

Check if your contact info at people.utwente.nl is up-to-date.

Online meetings can be arranged using Skype for Business or Bluejeans.

Also, be aware of IT security when you work at home (or on the road). The UT's security measures do not extend to your home- or other networks. So take extra care when using a secure WiFi network, make sure your computer, applications and anti-virus software are up to date. Also, pay special attention to attempts by criminals to steal your money or log in details.

My internet connection seems very slow. What I can do about it?
  • Check your speed and compare it to your plan. Run a speed test using a website like Speedtest.net to see how well it’s actually performing. Compare the measured speed results against the expected speed of the Internet connection plan.
  • Check your Wi-Fi signal strength. If low, reposition to get a better signal.
  • Limit de data usage of apps or other devices on the network.
  • Restart your modem, router and/or pc.
  • Disconnect the VPN if you do not need it.
  • Check if the slowness just happens on one computer, or all your devices? If it is only one device that is slow, the connection itself is fine.

NOTE: these tips are purely intended as a suggestion, the UT has no influence on a home network.
