Linda Ong Mendez Fonseca is a 25-year-old Biomedical Engineering master student of the University of Twente who came to Enschede in September 2015. She took a selfie and participated in the T-shirt contest with a story to tell. Find out more about her story below!
Why did you choose UT? What do you like most about UT?
Netherlands was one of my first options due to the good technology reputation that the country has, which is essential for my area. Among the Universities in Netherlands I choose UT because of the variety of the programmes and the amount of English taught ones. The international environment of the University was also essential in my decision, together with the large green area and the excellent infrastructure. You can find everything in the campus, since sport facilities, supermarket, etc.
What is the biggest difference in your current world compared to your previous world?
In The Netherlands people have a different way of life, they are more independent and autonomous. Here, I have to adapt myself to the environment fast, especially because all the communication has to be in English.
Another remarkable difference is the bicycle experience, which I love. Here you can go everywhere by bike, and it is very safe. Quite different from my hometown Bandung (Indonesia), where most of the people use private transport, generating lots of traffic jams. All the places here can be accessed fast and easy.
What is the story behind your selfie? Can you explain why this particular one?
When I took the selfie I wanted to show people that I could be a light for them, among the darkness around (darkness in a matter of problems). For those who need help, I can give them a bit of support (light).
What would you like to achieve during your stay at the UT?
The main objective that I want to achieve during my stay at UT is to use the education received to help people. My goal is not only obtain an academic degree, but to apply the knowledge in the field of Biomedical Engineering to improve people’s life, in my hometown, in my country, and why not in the world.
After finishing the Master, I would like to get some experience in the Dutch market. Therefore, I could gain some practical knowledge before I return to my country.
