René Meijerink
René studied Electrical Engineering at Hanze University of Applied Sciences. After graduation he decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Systems & Control. He finds S&C interesting because it enables him to combine the fields of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. “I chose this Master’s because I like to build things and this programme makes that possible. For instance, I can design and build robots that are of service to people”.
‘When I saw all the cool robots and the helicopter drones flying around during an Open Day, I knew I wanted to be involved in building these machines. So I started on the Master’s in Systems & Control’, René says. The topics covered in this programme can be applied in many different fields such as in the development of new techniques for medical applications. Our research can really make life better for people who need medical appliances such as a mechanical prosthetic arm or leg. Some prosthetics created by the Systems & Control department have no motor or batteries, which really contributes to the patient’s freedom of movement and quality of life. Some prosthetics do require motors or batteries, of course. René continues: ‘Being involved in something like this really makes my studies worthwhile and satisfying.’
He appreciates the open structure of the university, the spacious campus which is surrounded by nature, the nice people and the challenging research projects in which students also get involved. The city of Enschede is great for students thanks to all the pubs and cafés, restaurants and housing possibilities.
