Specialization Sustainable Energy Technology


The Sustainable Energy Technology specialization track educates students to become a member of a new generation of engineers that will lead the renewable energy revolution. Engineers that are not only focused on technological solutions but also on the impact and implementation of innovative energy technologies. Experts to respond to the global energy challenge.

The education is aimed to become an engineer who has an overview of technological solutions for the generation of sustainable energy. The UT SET engineer has a broad foundation but has also the capability to specialize in a specific field of sustainable energy and he has management skill and knowledge to be able to implement an innovative technological solution for energy-related problems, taking into account economic, social, environmental and ethical factors.

After successful completion of the SET master programme, the graduate is trained to be an engineer that is not only technical technically skilled but also a person that can operate in the total innovation chain towards sustainable energy supply, from the idea towards the final implementation.

UT SET engineers work as engineers, as researchers, as consultant or start their own company. They are employed in industry at large companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, Philips Research, Royal Haskoning DHV, at electricity network companies such as Aliander and PLN (Indonesia), at universities and other companies such as, Remeha (domestic heating systems and heat pumps), Senvion (wind turbine manufacturer), Ventilex (manufacturer of drying solutions).

Overview of the specialization year

The broad foundation, the skills and knowledge on technological as well as on social and entrepreneurial aspects is gained in the first year of the programme. The second year is aimed towards specialization in a specific field of sustainable energy.

The final master’s assignment is a 30 EC research thesis carried out individually in a specific field of sustainable energy technology related to research chairs of the UT, such as Solar energy, Wind energy, Biomass, Energy storage, Intelligent electricity networks or Transition policy. The thesis work is innovative and should contain technological as well as social aspects from sustainable energy solutions. The research is performed under the supervision of two (daily) supervisors, one from a technical discipline and one from a social discipline to guarantee that both aspects are represented. Conditionally, the SET thesis research can be done (partially) at an external institute or organization.

To achieve the in-depth knowledge to carry out the research assignment 15 EC of specializations courses have to be chosen. These specialization subjects should be chosen in the field of specialization in consultation with the supervisors and can range from course in the field of laser processing for solar cells and the design of process equipment to chemical reaction engineering, energy efficient embedded systems and design methodology. *Bachelors entering from a university of professional education (HBO) who have considerable industrial experience are not allowed to do an internship (stage). Instead of an internship they should follow 15 ec master courses.
