Sustainable Energy and Technology

Are you interested in joining the Master’s programme in Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) after you have obtained your Bachelor’s degree? If so, you may be required to complete a pre-Master’s programme first.

Students with an international bachelor degree can only apply directly for the master programme and do not have the possibility to participate in a premaster programme.

What is a pre-Master's programme?

The pre-Master's programme is a transfer and bridging programme for higher professional education (‘hbo’ in Dutch) or university education Bachelor's programme students who wish to obtain a university Master's degree, but who cannot be admitted directly. Once you have successfully completed the pre-Master's programme, you will be granted admission to the Master’s programme of Sustainable Energy Technology.

Students with an international Bachelor's degree can only apply directly for the Master's programme and do not have the possibility to participate in a pre-Master's programme.

Pre-master's goal

The pre-Master’s goal is to prepare you for the Master’s programme. This means you will be taught various scientific skills and your skills in mathematics will be improved. You will also attend several courses related to Sustainable Energy Technology. If you manage to successfully complete the pre-Master’s within one year, you will be able to enrol in one of these two Master's programmes. After obtaining your Master’s degree, you will be the professional who can successfully implement technologies, leading the way towards a sustainable society.

As a University of Applied Sciences (hbo) student as well as a university student you can start on the pre-Master's during your Bachelor's degree as a minor (transfer minor/'Kies op maat') or after completing your Bachelor’s degree.

Start Date

For the standard pre-Master’s programme of 30 EC (for hbo students) you can start the pre-Master's in September. In case of an individual pre-Master’s programme (for wo students) the start date also depends on the specific deficit programme needed.

After successfully completing the pre-Master's programme wo students can directly enter the Master's programme.
Students doing their pre-Master’s as part of their University of Applied Sciences degree (transfer minor/'Kies op maat') can enter the Master’s programme in February or September after finishing their University of Applied Sciences Bachelor's programme.

Whether you are an University of Applied Sciences student or a university student, you can start the pre-Master's programme during your Bachelor's programme as a minor or after obtaining your Bachelor’s degree.

For hbo students

A pre-Master's programme contains 30 credits.  This is a fulltime study programme of one semester and contains the following courses:

for university students

The study workload, or number of EC the pre-Master’s programme for Dutch University students consists of/ depends on your previous education and will not be the same for everyone. Pre-Master’s programmes for Dutch university students range between 15-60 EC.

The pre-Master's programme is taught in English.

The pre-Master’s programme is designed for students who have the motivation and capacities to obtain an academic degree from an English-taught Master’s programme Sustainable Energy Technology. If you will be eligible for admission to the pre-Master's programme depends on your previous education.

Requirements for Dutch students:

  • Check the transfermatrix to see which Master’s programmes are accessible with your Bachelor’s programme.
  • A minimum level of English and Mathematics (VWO-level English and Mathematics B). This is the student's responsibility. Previous experiences have shown that hardly any students manage to successfully complete the transfer minor if they do not comply with these requirements.
  • University of Applied Sciences students who want to do the pre-Master’s as a transfer minor must have obtained at least 120 EC in order to be admitted to the transfer minor.

International students

Students with an international Bachelor’s degree can only apply for the Master’s programme directly and do not have the option of participating in a pre-Master's programme.

Rules of the pre-Master’s programme

The pre-master’s programme is designed not only to address any deficiencies in your prior knowledge, but it is also an effective way to find out whether studying at a research university is right for you. Therefore, the following rules apply:

  • The pre-Master’s programme must be successfully completed within one year
  • There is a maximum of re-sit per course
  • If you do not successfully complete the pre-Master’s, it is not possible to start a pre-Master’s in another programme at the faculty of Engineering Technology

Pre-Master application route

You can apply for admittance online, see Students who integrate the premaster’s programme in their programme of a University of Applied Sciences, can apply via kiesopmaat.

Keep an eye on the application deadlines and check them prior to your application (pre-master and master deadlines are most of the times identical).
