Career perspectives

Get support in choosing a master’s

Given the in-depth insights in advanced technologies you will acquire during the Emerging Technology Design (ETD) track, you will be able to find a job in which this technological expertise comes to use, such as a product designer, innovation specialist or R&D engineer, to name just a few of the many options. Are you a real entrepreneur? You can also start up your own business, like some of our former students did. Or you can opt to further develop yourself by following an EngD or PhD-programme

Type of degree

When you have completed Master’s with the ETD track, you will receive a Master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc.). Your track will not be mentioned on your diploma, as the programme is designed in a way that all graduates – regardless of their track – meet the requirements of a qualified industrial design engineer.

Job opportunities

After graduating, you will be equipped to enter any area of industrial design engineering – not just the area of your Master’s track. You might, however, bring a specific perspective to the job you fulfil, that distinguishes you from graduates of other Master’s tracks.

UT alumni with this track currently work in various positions and organisations. For example:
  • Design manager at LEGO Group
  • Project Engineer at Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways)
  • Process Improvement Engineer at Jacobs Douwe Egberts
  • Quality Engineer at VDL

As a graduate of the Master’s track in Emerging Technology Design, you will be specialised in the technological possibilities and able to use these in developing and improving products that people can benefit from. As you can deploy this expertise in any kind of field or position, you will be in high demand on the job market.

For example, you can join a company’s research & development team, get a job in innovation or help a company get ahead of the market with new technological applications. You could go on to work for big (tech-) companies, such as Philips, Nedap or Ten Cate, but also engineering firms like PCV Group or Demcon, to name a few of the employers that our graduates end up working for. They fulfil highly various jobs, such as industrial designer, product engineer, R&D engineer, innovation specialist or innovation director, to name just a few.

Start a business

Do you have a great business idea? At the University of Twente, you can turn it into reality! At UT, we highly encourage entrepreneurship. In fact, UT has been voted the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands four times in a row. We have a unique approach of putting scientific knowledge to practical use and turning our expertise and yours into solutions that people and society actually need. As a catalyst for meaningful entrepreneurship, we offer you the Novel-T foundation and the start-up hub on campus.

Former students have gone before you. For example, Aryzon, a company that develops 3D Augmented Reality Headsets and industrial design agency Dynteq, were once started up by IDE graduates. Will you be next?

Continue as a researcher: obtain a PhD

Instead of pursuing a professional career as an industrial design engineer right away after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt to follow a PhD programme as facilitated by Twente Graduate School. This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth in one of our research chairs. Obtaining your PhD will earn you the title of Doctor (Dr.).

Follow an EngD programme

For excellent professionals and graduates with a Master’s degree from a university, TGS offers five different Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programmes. These two-year, tailored programmes are aimed at you becoming a high-level technological designer. The EngD programme most likely to match your interests as a Master's in Industrial Design Engineering would be Maintenance. On successfully completing the programme, you will receive a certified diploma and the academic degree title, Engineering Doctorate (EngD.). Interested in doing an EngD? You can check below if there are any vacancies. If not, you can also send in an open application.
