Admission requirements for Chemical Science & Engineering

You can find a detailed list of all the admission requirements below.

  • Required knowlegde

    • Bachelor of Science, or equivalent, in Chemical Science & Engineering or Chemistry
    • Knowledge of the following topics: calculus and analysis, linear algebra, integration and differential equations

  • Success in your studies requires a high level of English proficiency. Therefore, prospective master's students with an international degree must meet the English language requirement. The application will only be processed when the English language requirements have been met, the University of Twente does not offer possible conditional admission if the English language requirement is not met. 

    If you take the test after the application deadline, or you do not have the official English certificate before the application deadline, the University of Twente will not process your application. Therefore, make sure to do the test in advance, as it will take time for you to get the official certificate.

    As proof that you meet this requirement, you will be asked in the application procedure to upload one of the requested language certificates below. Only these internationally recognised test results will be accepted. 

    • TOEFL iBT (internet-based) certificate, not older than two years, with an overall score of 90, and a minimum score on each section of at least 21. Please note that the University of Twente does not accept the MyBest scores of the TOEFL test. By exception, you can also take the TOEFL iBT (Special) Home Edition test (only valid for the February & September 2026 and February 2027 intake). This is only the case when you cannot use a regular language test as listed in this table, because the on-site language test centre is closed due to unsafe situations in your country.
    • Cambridge C1 Advanced, formerly known as; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) from 2015 onwards (when the subscores were introduced). Obtained with an overall score of at least 176 and a minimum score on each section of at least 169. Both the ‘digital or paper-based’ are accepted by the University of Twente.
    • Cambridge C2 Proficiency, formerly known as; Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) from 2015 onwards (when the subscores were introduced). Obtained an A, B or C grade, with an overall score of at least 176 and a minimum score on each section of at least 169. Both the ‘digital or paper-based’ are accepted by the University of Twente.
    • PTE Academic certificate, not older than two years, with an overall score of at least 63, and a minimum score on each section of 59 (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Only the standard PTE Academic test is accepted. The PTE Core and PTE Academic Online are not accepted by the University of Twente. Please note: PTE Academic will only be accepted from the September 2026 intake onwards.
    • LANGUAGECERT Academic certificate, not older than two years, with an overall score (band score/minimum score) of 70, and minimum subscores of 65 in Reading and Listening, and 70 in Speaking and Writing. Only the standard LANGUAGECERT Academic (in-person) test is accepted.

    KEEP IN MIND

    • During your application, the University of Twente will verify your proof of English proficiency. The IELTS (academic) and TOEFL iBT are only accepted once it is not older than two years. Since your application will not be immediately reviewed, please kindly make sure that your English certificate is still valid for at least one month after you have submitted your application to Osiris. Please note: In some cases, it might take longer before your application is reviewed. 
    • The language requirements when applying for a scholarship may be different because scholarship providers may have different requirements.
    • If you are a native English speaker and/or you have (fully) completed your education in English, you also have to meet the specific English language requirement.

    All officially recognised exemptions to the standard English language requirements are clearly outlined on the University's website. Please consult the English Language Tool to determine whether any of the listed exceptions may apply to your situation.

    Please note that individual requests for waivers outside the stated exceptions cannot be considered, as the University of Twente does not offer English waivers.

    Make sure to answer the follow-up questions after selecting your country. Selecting your country alone does not automatically entitle you to an exemption, as it forms only one part of the overall assessment.

Basic requirements per country

To follow a master's programme at UT, you have to meet the basic requirements; you should have at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised university or accredited academic institution in a discipline related to the master’s programme of your choice. 

You also have to meet the specific requirements of the master's programme itself. This specific admission requirement per master's can be found on each programme's website

You application will only be reviewed once all requested documents are uploaded and submitted before the application deadline. Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed. For instance, if you have not yet taken your English language test, your application will not be considered.

      Legal restrictions in relation to dual use technology

      Students from Belarus are welcome to study at UT. However, please note that restrictions may be in place when you apply for a technical study at the University of Twente and have Belarussian nationality. The restrictions are in response to international sanctions on technical assistance in relation to dual use technology. You can find more information at the Student Services website.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree or Grade de Bachelier.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75 out of 100.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Licenciado/a or Título Profesional with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75 out of 100.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bacharel or Licenciado/a with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75 out of 100.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Diplom za visshe obrazovanie na obrazovatelno kvalifikatsionna stepen (Profesionalen) Bakalavr (Диплома за висше образование на образователно-квалификационна степен бакалавр).

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Licence (Bachelor’s degree) obtained after 2008, or a Diplôme d’Ingénieur Agronome (DIA), with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 14 out of 20, or 3.0 out of 4.0.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have Honours Bachelor’s degree, Baccalauréat, or Bachelier with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 70 out of 100.  Applications with a General Bachelor’s degree will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Título Profesional or Licenciado/a with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 5 out of 7.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

      In addition to that, your application will also be reviewed based on the institution (such as Project 985, Project 211 Institution, First Class University, First Discipline University, Double First Class University, or other) you have attended.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Licenciado/a, Título Profesional, or Especialista with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.5 out of 5.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachiller or Licenciado/a with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Baccalaureas/Baccalaurea degree from a Professional (Stručni Prvostupnik/Prvostupnica) or University (Sveučilišni Prvostupnik/Prvostupnica).

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Título de Licenciado, Arquitecto, Doctor or Ingeniero degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 4 out of 5.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Ptychio (Πτυχίο).

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Diplom with Bakalář degree.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Licenciado/a or Título Profesional with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 7.5 out of 10.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie, or a Licence.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree obtained from 2020 onwards, from the University of The Gambia or from institutions accredited by the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA).

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75 out of 100.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor from a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences)*, a Diplom from a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences)*, or a Bachelor’s degree from a research-oriented higher education institution.

      * Note: you may not be (directly) admissible. Please check the programme site to see if a pre-master’s programme is offered for the master’s programme of your choice and whether your previous education gives permission to do so or do the eligibility check for admission advice.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 70%, or 3.5 out of 4.0.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Licenciado/a or Título de […], with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Título de Licenciado/a or Grado Académico de Licenciatura with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 80%, or 3.0 out of 4.0.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least an Honours Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Alapfokozat (Bachelor’s degree) or Egyetemi Oklevél Alap Képzés.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Baccalaureus (Bachelor’s degree).

    • To be considered for admission to a master’s programme, applicants should have at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 75% (First Class). Admission eligibility may also depend on whether the teaching institution is recognised as a top institution*. A three-year Bachelor’s degree will be accepted only if it is an Honours degree awarded by a top institution*.

      *Note: Top institutions are defined as those of national importance, institutions of eminence, or teaching institutions (not necessarily the awarding body) that held the highest NAAC accreditation at the time of graduation. Please note that your teaching institution and awarding institution may differ, and they may have held or currently hold different NAAC accreditation grades, which could affect your admissibility. 

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Diploma IV (D IV) also known as ‘Sarjana Terapan’*, or a Sarjana I (SI) with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 7 out of 10, or 2.7 out of 4.

      Legal restrictions in relation to dual use technology

      Students from Iran are welcome to study at UT. However, please note that restrictions may be in place when you apply for a technical study at the University of Twente and have Iranian nationality. The restrictions are in response to international sanctions on technical assistance in relation to dual use technology. You can find more information at the Student Services website.

      The four sanctioned universities in Iran are:

      • Malek Ashtar University;
      • Shahid Beheshti University;
      • Sharif University of Technology;  and the
      • Iran Composites Institute at the Iranian University of Science and Technology.

      Students who studied earlier at one of these sanctioned universities are also welcome to study at UT. Please note that restrictions may be in place when you apply for a technical study at the University of Twente and have a Iranian nationality.       Note: based on the advice from our International Expertise Centre (Nuffic), the University of Twente will request an extra document during the application to do a credential evaluation of your diploma, as follows:

      • An extract letter from the Rosobrnadzor system states the authenticity of your diploma, or
      • A letter from the Russian educational institution confirming that the diploma is authentic and sent directly to our email address StudentServices@utwente.nl, mentioning your UT student number.

      Students from the Russian Federation are welcome to study at UT. However, please note that restrictions may be in place when you apply for a technical study at the University of Twente and have Russian nationality.     • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least an Honours Bachelor’s degree.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.7 out of 4.0.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Licenciatura Universitaria with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Baklavr degree or Specialist Diploma with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 4.0 out of 5.0.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Licenciado/a or a Título professional, such as Abogado or Ingeniero, with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bằng Cử Nhân (Degree of Bachelor), a Bằng Kỹ Sư (Degree of Bachelor of Engineering), or a Bằng Tốt Nghiệp Đại Học (University Graduation Certificate) indicating the obtained Bachelor’s degree, with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

    • To be considered for admission to a master's programme, applicants should have at least a three-year Honours Bachelor’s degree with a final cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.

If your degree(s) is mentioned above and you fulfil the minimum CGPA as mentioned in the country list, it does not mean you are automatically admissible. Even if you meet the CGPA, this does not mean that you will be admitted, as the admission committee will also review your relevant courses and the scores you hold for these (relevant) courses. 

The University of Twente will take your application under consideration and will then proceed to transfer it to a pre-master's programme in case you are not directly eligible for a master's programme. If some cases, you might receive a rejection of your application, please be aware this rejection is valid for both master's and pre-master's programmes.
