"My year abroad in Berlin was amazing on so many different levels."
‘’After my bachelor's, I had to decide whether to continue working at my internship company, find another job, or continue my studies. I started looking into potential master’s and the Business Administration Master at the University of Twente (UT) caught my eye right away. The different track options appealed to me; especially the EIS track, which combines all the subjects I am most interested in to expand my knowledge further. Even though I was already aware of the opportunity to do a double degree programme, I didn’t know any details yet. So, I applied for the regular EIS track BA master, moved to Enschede, and after finishing my pre-master at the UT, I started with my master's.
Studying abroad
During my Business Administration Master's, the double degree (DD) opportunity circled back to me. After gathering more information and sparring with one of my study advisors, I knew that this DD programme was right up my alley and would add a lot of value to my master’s degree. The DD programme combines the EIS track with the IMES Master at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin). So, instead of having a one-year master's, I did an additional year abroad in Berlin and this was rewarded by obtaining not one, but two master's degrees from both the UT and the TU Berlin. For this, only one master’s thesis is required, which made the DD program even more attractive.
After finishing my courses at UT, I moved to Berlin to start my adventure there! My year abroad in Berlin was amazing on so many different levels. First of all, I loved that I could expand my interests with an additional focus on sustainability. At TU Berlin, there are many subjects to choose from in different directions. I decided to focus on the sustainability part of this programme. The programme at TU Berlin was a bit different than the one at UT. In Berlin, you follow two semesters, each of half a year. So, within one semester, you are following more courses than at UT for a longer period, which makes you dive deeper into these subjects.
New experiences
My year abroad in Berlin was really interesting. I made amazing new friends and explored the beautiful city of Berlin and other nearby cities. I also joined the IMES Community as a board member for the study itself and everything attached to IMES, went on an awesome IMES trip to Poland, attended many interesting (international) events and presented at an International Congress (Cradle to Cradle Congress). Furthermore, I visited the Special Olympics in the Olympiastadion Berlin, went to the cutest Christmas markets and of course made many more memories!
So, going abroad not only expanded my academic knowledge, but also allowed me to broaden my interests, explore another country, and meet many interesting new people from all over the world. Moreover, it gave me a new direction of what I would love to do after graduation, and I got to know myself even better. Personally, the DD programme added a lot of extra value to my master's and I would recommend it to everyone!
