For Dutch HBO students | Admission and application

AS A BACHELOR'S STUDENT FROM A UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES (HBO), YOU NEED TO FOLLOW A PRE-MASTER'S FIRST.

If you have a bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences (Dutch ‘HBO’), you do not immediately fulfil all the admission requirements. If your ‘HBO’ diploma is sufficiently business administration-related, (see below), we will draw up a personalised pre-master's for you. You can only enter a master's after you have met the requirements of your Pre-Master's. The purpose of the Pre-Master's is to bring your knowledge up to the required level.

Whether you might be admitted to the (Pre-)Master's, depends on your previous education. There are several ways to find out if your bachelor's is sufficiently related.

Tip: is your educational institute not listed? Check if a similar bachelor's is offered at one of the listed institutes. If that one is admissible, then you might be eligible with your bachelor's too! Just contact the study adviser if you are still trying to figure out if your bachelor's is sufficiently relevant.

If you have completed an HBO bachelor's that is not listed above, and you can argue and prove that your knowledge and skills in business administration are relevant and sufficient for the Master's in Business Administration, you can also apply for admission. In all cases, the admission committee will conduct an individual assessment procedure to determine if you have sufficient basic qualifications in business administration, for example in the form of a minor or additional modules in Business Administration or, in the case of students with a higher education qualification in engineering and technology (HTO), a post-HBO bachelor's in Bedrijfskunde such as the BK5 programme offered at Saxion University of Applied Sciences.

Pre-Higher Education level English

You must be able to demonstrate proficiency in English at pre-higher education level. You can demonstrate this by submitting one of the following documents (minimum requirements).

A HAVO level diploma including English of at least level 6.0
A VWO level diploma including English of at least level 6.0
Transcript showing completion of the Saxion English course (no longer offered at Saxion as of academic year 2021-2022)
Academic IELTS, for minimum scores you have to obtain, please see the language requirement website
TOEFL, internet-based (TOEFL-iBT), for minimum scores you have to obtain, please see the language requirement website
Cambridge CAE-C (CPE), for minimum scores you have to obtain, please see the language requirement website

Pre-Higher Education level Mathematics A or B

You must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Mathematics at pre-higher education level. You can demonstrate this by submitting one of the following documents (minimum requirements):

A HAVO or VWO level diploma including Mathematics A of B of at least level 6.0
A separate HAVO level diploma in Mathematics A or B of at least level 6.0

- Refer to the NHA (exam must be passed)
- Transcript showing completion of the Saxion Mathematics course for programmes in non-technical subjects (no longer offered at Saxion as of academic year 2021-2022)

Copy of diploma.
Transcript of records.
Summary of thesis in English language (BSc or MSc).
Motivational letter, explaining why you and the programme are a great fit (max. 2 pages). Give a clear and relevant statement of motivation for one of the specialisations.
Résumé stating relevant work experience, extracurricular activities, honours or awards obtained (Tip: use the format of Europass to make sure everything is included).

During or after your HBO

You have the option to follow the Pre-Master's during your current HBO bachelor's within a transfer minor. It's an option worth considering as it saves you time and money: the programme of 30 EC fits within your minor space and you do not incur any extra costs because you have already paid tuition fees for your bachelor's. A second option is to first get your bachelor's degree and then transfer to this Master's via the Pre-Master's.

Do I need to apply for a pre-master's?

You don't need to apply for the Pre-Master's directly. You apply by signing up for this Master's. UT will alter this to a pre-master's registration. Once you are admitted, you get access to the Pre-Master's automatically.

How you apply, depends on whether you take the Pre-Master's during or after your HBO bachelor's. If you take (part of) the Pre-Master's during your bachelor's, you apply for a transfer minor via the Kies op Maat website. If you decide to do the Pre-Master's after completing your bachelor's, you apply via Studielink.

Didn't graduate yet?

You may be admitted to the Pre-Master's on the condition that you still have to pass. Therefore, you can start up your application even though you have not yet completed your HBO bachelor's. You may be granted conditional acceptance based on your transcripts, detailed curriculum information, relevant research and expected graduation date. To finally be enrolled in the (Pre-)Master's, you do need to submit your bachelor's degree, once you have obtained this.

Start dates

After completing your HBO bachelor's and the Pre-Master's, you can start your Master's in Business Administration in February or September.

The Pre-Master's starts every September and February. Keep an eye on the application deadline and check them prior to your application. However, the deadline depends on the route you chose. For following the Pre-Master's during your HBO bachelor's – the so-called transfer minor – the deadline is earlier than the deadline when you wish to follow the Pre-Master's after the HBO programme.
