The specialization imaging and in vitro diagnostics is part of the Master's programme Biomedical Engineering.

What is Imaging and in Vitro diagnostics?

Scientists in the Imaging & in vitro Diagnostics programme are dedicated to visualizing and understanding the biological processes in cells and humans. The new methods that scientists create for ultrasensitive diagnostics are not only extremely clear and exact, but also significantly reduce the impact on the patient by imaging the body without the need for an operation or the injection of contrast fluid. Ultimately, new techniques will be developed that enable physicians to offer their patients better treatment based on improved evidence from in vitro imaging and in vitro diagnostics that are more fit-for-purpose and that provide a quicker cure.

Key research areas

On a smaller (cell-level) scale, our researchers use the latest techniques based on optics, optical microscopy, lab-on-a-chip and other in vitro diagnostics. On a larger scale, looking at the entire human body, this can for instance be done by using photo-acoustics, ultrasound, radiation or magnetism (CT or MRI, also). A combination of fundamental science and imaging techniques allows researchers to investigate how certain structural abnormalities of proteins are related to diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.  

The specialization Imaging & in vitro Diagnostics is integrated in the inspiring and innovative Technical Medical Centre of the University of Twente, which aims to improve healthcare by personalized technology. It is connected to the research domain Imaging & Diagnostics that aims to revolutionize the entire medical trajectory from diagnosis to follow-up. 

Structure of this track

The first year of the specialization Imaging and in vitro Diagnostics of Biomedical Engineering consists of compulsory courses and electives that are pre-structured fit to this track, supplemented by a free choice of electives.
