About the course

Long Waves & Tidal Morphodynamics provides a theoretical foundation for understanding processes in seas and coastal systems. In this course, you will focus on the dynamics of tides, long waves, wind-driven flow, sediment transport and morphodynamic change in marine environments. This helps professionals develop insight into how these processes shape coastal and offshore systems, and how simplified mathematical models can be used to understand their behaviour.

About the topic

Understanding hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes is essential for assessing the impact of human activities and environmental change in coastal and offshore systems. Although large-scale tidal and long-wave processes are often not directly visible in day-to-day engineering practice, they strongly influence sediment transport, coastal and seabed development, and system behaviour. Professionals working in marine, coastal or water-related environments benefit from a strong conceptual and mathematical understanding of these processes, especially when they need to interpret models, understand system behaviour or communicate with specialists.

Course structure

This is a regular master course in which both students and professionals can participate. The course combines lectures, tutorials, self-study and one group assignment.

During the course, participants complete a group assignment. This assignment adds a more practical and interpretative layer to the otherwise theoretical course. Groups usually consist of three participants, although individual completion may be possible if needed.

  • A group assignment (30%)
  • A written exam (70%)
  • There is some flexibility for professional learners: depending on the purpose of participation, it may be possible to follow only part of the course, complete only selected components, or attend without full examination.
  • Teaching takes place on campus. Lecture recordings may be available as backup, but the course is not set up as a hybrid course by default.

Intended participants

This course is intended for professionals who want to deepen their understanding of tidal dynamics, large-scale marine processes and coastal morphodynamics. Typical profiles include, but are not limited to, coastal engineers, hydraulic engineers, marine modellers, researchers, environmental consultants and technical specialists involved in water and sediment systems.

Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of programming in Python, as well as prior knowledge of differential equations and linear partial differential equations.
