Hydraulic Engineering provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles behind water works, with a primary focus on dykes and hydraulic structures. In this course, you will learn how flood defenses and hydraulic structure’s function, how they are designed and constructed, how they can fail, and how their safety can be assessed and improved.
The course covers both fundamental concepts and practical engineering methods, using dikes and hydraulic structures as core examples. You will gain insight into materials, failure mechanisms, calculation methods and conceptual design approaches. This course is highly relevant for professionals working on flood risk, water safety and hydraulic infrastructure.
As climate change, extreme weather events and increasing pressure on land and water systems affect the performance of flood defenses, there is a growing need for professionals who understand both the technical and societal dimensions of hydraulic infrastructure. Dikes, hydraulic structures and other flood defence systems must not only be designed and maintained properly but also be assessed and reinforced in time. Professionals who understand how these systems work are essential for safe, reliable water management.
This is a regular course on which both students and professionals can participate. Apart from lectures the course contains two group assignments in which participants work on a dike design and assessment case. In these assignments, you apply the methods and tools introduced in the course to evaluate safety and propose engineering solutions. Groups usually consist of two to three participants. The course concludes with an individual written exam.

This course is intended for professionals who want to strengthen their understanding of dikes, hydraulic structures and flood defence systems. Typical roles include, but are not limited to, professionals working in water management, hydraulic engineering, infrastructure design, environmental consultancy or engineers working in flood safety and water systems.
Participants are expected to have some prior understanding of water flow, wave behaviour and the movement of water in natural and engineered systems.
