Discover how Building Information Modelling improves design, planning and collaboration, and learn to use digital models for integrated construction and infrastructure management.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) focuses on managing and exchanging information throughout the life cycle of construction and infrastructure projects. Instead of treating BIM only as a design tool, the course presents it as a collaborative approach that connects technology, information and project processes.
You will learn how digital models can support design, planning, cost estimation, construction and asset management. Topics include semantic and object-oriented modelling, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), interoperability, 4D and 5D planning, simulation, constructability analysis and collaboration between project stakeholders. Through practical use of BIM methods and software, you explore how information modelling can reduce errors, improve communication and support integrated project management.
Construction projects generate large amounts of information throughout their life cycle. When this information is fragmented across systems, documents and organisations, it can lead to errors, duplicated work and inefficient communication. BIM provides a shared digital basis for managing and exchanging project information.
The construction and infrastructure sectors increasingly need professionals who understand both the technical and organisational aspects of BIM. This includes working with digital models, exchanging information between platforms and coordinating stakeholders across design, construction and operation. BIM is also closely connected to developments such as digital twins and data driven infrastructure management.
This regular master’s course is open to both students and professionals. The first three weeks focus mainly on theory, followed by tutorials and an intensive group project.
During the project, groups of approximately four participants take on different roles in a construction project. Each participant uses BIM models and methods to support design communication, planning and project management. The project consists of several interim deliverables. Participants receive feedback and an indicative grade, allowing them to improve their work before combining the deliverables into a final report and presentation.
A suitable case from a participant’s organisation may be used, provided it meets the course requirements. The course also includes a session with several guest lecturers from professional practice.
Details and assessment:
The group project must be completed within the quartile. The oral examination can be scheduled separately within the academic year.
This course is intended for professionals who want to use BIM to improve information management, planning and collaboration in construction and infrastructure projects. Typical profiles include, but are not limited to, BIM coordinators, civil engineers, project managers, construction managers, designers, consultants, contractors, suppliers and asset managers.
A bachelor-level background in Civil Engineering or a related technical field is recommended. Prior experience with BIM software is not required, but participants should be prepared to work intensively with digital modelling tools during the course.
If you successfully complete the course, you will receive a microcredential. This microcredential is a digital record confirming that you have passed the assessment components of the regular master’s course and achieved the corresponding learning outcomes.
You may also participate without completing the assessments. If you choose this option, or do not pass all assessment components, you will receive a digital certificate of participation.
