Study abroad for UT students

Get started on your study abroad adventure at one of UT's partner universities.

Looking to spend a semester abroad and earn credits toward your UT degree? It’s easier than you might think! As a UT bachelor’s or master’s student, you can join an exchange programme and study at one of our international partner universities. These universities have special agreements with UT, making the process smooth and accessible.

Typically, you'll spend a full semester abroad – taking courses that count toward your UT programme. The best part? You won’t pay tuition fees at the host university, and you’ll gain valuable international experience while staying on track with your studies. Ready to explore your options?

Where can I study abroad?

UT has student exchange agreements with over 250 partner universities in more than 50 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, the UK and many more.

What are the conditions?

  • The specific conditions for studying at a partner university abroad differ per study programme. You can find the requirements in the Education and Examination Regulations (EER.) Visit the Study Abroad Canvas page of your faculty or contact your Faculty Exchange Coordinator for more information.
  • For non-EU universities with institutional (UT-wide) agreements an extra selection round is applicable which may include a GPA requirement. You can find the details in the Mobility-Online Search Portal (search for the university, scroll down, then click the ‘’i’’ button.)
  • There may be a language requirement to study at the partner university. This information will be provided by the partner university.
  • Travelling is only allowed to safe countries (green and yellow areas at NederlandWereldWijd - enter the country name in Dutch.) If you do travel to an unsafe region (orange and red areas), please be aware you are no longer eligible for a scholarship. Please visit What to Arrange for more information.

What are the costs?

If you participate in an exchange programme at one of UT’s partner universities, you pay tuition fees to UT and not to your international host university. However keep in mind that there will be other costs of studying abroad, such as travel, housing, food, transport, utilities, tourist activities etc.

During your studies at UT there are possibilities to study abroad with financial support. Whether you are travelling to an EU or non-EU country, you may be eligible for a scholarship. The scholarship is a contribution to the costs of studying abroad; it does not cover all costs.

The costs of each exchange destination vary depending on the country and city. To find out more about the experiences of UT exchange students at each destination, including the costs, view the Let’s GO! student presentations.

What are the steps to take?

If you want to go abroad you have to arrange a lot of things yourself. Preparations for studying abroad may take nine to twelve months, so start your orientation as soon as possible.

Below you can view the steps involved in studying abroad.

Orientation

Orientation: 12 - 9 months in advance

In the pre-application phase, you can orientate yourself on all of your possibilities to study abroad. Register for and read the information in your faculty's study abroad Canvas site, talk with students who have been abroad and/or students from abroad who are currently visiting the UT, go to the study abroad fair, watch the student presentations, join Facebook groups, etc.

Application

Application: 8 - 3 months in advance

After you have decided that you want to go abroad and what you want to do abroad, check your faculty's study abroad Canvas site for the specific application requirements.

Your next step is to register in Mobility-Online. Make sure that you register for the right activity and academic year! After registration of the activity, you will be able to log in to continue with and monitor the status of your application for this activity.

Preparation

Preparation: 3 - 1 months in advance

After you have applied successfully and you have permission to go ahead, you will need to arrange some practical matters for your study abroad.
