Combi courses & research project: How to apply

How to apply?

Follow the steps below to start and complete your Mobility-Online application. You will also find practical information to help you prepare for your departure to the Netherlands.

  • Application process
    • Nomination phase

Your home university must be an official exchange partner of UT and must nominate you through our Mobility Online system before the deadline. Reach out to your home university to arrange your nomination.

    • Start your application

After you have been nominated by your home university, you will receive a link via the University of Twente to start your application in the platform Mobility Online by creating an account.

Keep in mind: you have to meet the English language requirements, and the application deadlines. For questions about your application get in touch with Student Services.

    • Submit your application including documents

After creating an account in Mobility Online, you take the following steps:

      Step 1
You need to submit the following documents digitally:
      - A valid international passport /ID card
      - An original transcript of records in English; note that if you are a master's student you need to upload your bachelor's and master's transcript of records.
      - English test results as indicated on our website.

      Step 2
In Mobility Online, you select the courses you wish to follow, worth up to a maximum of 15 ECTS per quartile.

      Step 3
Confirm your application before the deadline for assessment by UT. After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email.

    • Find a research group and supervisor

Simultaneously in completing your application, find a supervisor in your preferred research group.

      Faculty of Engineering Technology
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science
      Faculty of Science & Technology
Faculty of Behavioural Management and Social Sciences
Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation

On the websites of the research groups you can find the details of contact persons of that group. Send an email with your request including your CV (curriculum vitae), transcript of records, and motivation letter why you want to opt for a placement and which ideas you want to work on.

      Discuss terms and conditions
When you have received a positive response from the research group, you need to discuss the terms and conditions of your placement. This means you have to agree on:

      - Content of the research project
      - Start and end date (see application deadlines).
      - Amount of ECTS (minimum of 5 ECTS and maximum 60 ECTS; 1 ECTS is 28 hours)
      Course code.

Note that acceptance by the research group does not automatically mean that you are accepted for a placement at our university. Acceptance also depends on other administrative requirements, e.g. visa and placement period. It is not possible to inform you in advance (before applying) about the outcome of this administrative part of the assessment.

    • Assessment of your application

The University of Twente will assess if you meet the requirements based on the information and the documents you have provided. We will also check whether you are eligble to follow the selected courses or modules/minors.

We aim to inform you about your admissibility within a few weeks after your application. In case your application is incomplete or additional information is needed, we will contact you.

For questions about courses, get in touch with our faculty exchange coordinator. And for questions on your application process, reach out to Student Services.

    • Upload your Learning Agreement

Once your documents and courses or modules/minors have been approved, you need to download and return a learning agreement via Mobility Online. The learning agreement needs to be signed by your home university, the University of Twente, and yourself.
The learning agreement needs to include the placement course code as well.

Once the learning agreement has been approved by our University, you can download the acceptance letter via Mobility Online.

    • Visa, housing and enrolment

Once you have been accepted in Mobility Online, you are ready for registration  in our student information system Osiris.

      Visa and student housing
Depending on your situation, UT will assist international students requiring an entry visa for the Netherlands. and finding student accommodation. You will be contacted by our Student Services by email about the steps to take.

If you are an incoming exchange student who does not require an entry visa and/or residence permit, you need to find an accommodation yourself. Tip: create an account at Roomspot.

      More information about housing.

      Enrolment
You will receive a confirmation email with login details for Osiris and details how to complete your enrolment.

      - Read the Get started guide. This guide is aimed at first-year bachelor's students, but will provide you useful information.

    • Kick-In and Faculty introduction days

UT organises an introduction period for new (international) students before the start of every Fall and Spring semester.

      Kick-In introduction days
During the Kick-In, you will meet your fellow programme students, our campus, and Enschede. You will get invited via email by the Kick-In committee.

Extension: if you would like to extend your period, you need to have the approval of your home university and the faculty exchange coordinator at UT. Once you have the approval from your home university and UT, your enrolment will be extended.

The total duration of your stay can not exceed twelve months and depends if your residence permit can be extended.
