National Day for Sustainability in Higher Education

On 24 May 2019 Avans University of Applied Sciences in Den Bosch was host to the National Day for Sustainability in Higher Education. This day of inspiration of knowledge sharing was organized by Studenten voor Morgen, Het Groene Brein, SURF en RVO.

Keynote Jan Jonker, professor Corporate Sustainability

Jan Jonker, professor Corporate Sustainability at Radboud University engaged the audience with his keynote. A transition period is caharacterised by the fact that nothing is certain, not even that. The climate challenge, the sustainability challenge and the circularity challenge demand an energy transition, a transition of the economy and a transition of material use.

We know it should not continue as it is now, but we don’t know yet how to realise that. This period of change is a difficult one. Trends and developments put pressure on the existing system. Transitions don’t grow naturally, it is hard work. He concluded that you need Living Labs to enable students to shape these transitions.

Pitches and presentations

Afterwards there were pitches and presentations, for example by the fairclimatefund.nl for CO2 compensation, the book the hidden impact by Babette Porcelijn that puts the consumer in the driver’s seat and an interactive session with TAUW where virtual and augmented reality were used to create support for changes in public spaces. An idea for on the campus?

TU/e won best practice award

The three best best practices submitted as part of the Sustainabul benchmark were presented. TU/e with Team Solid won the best practice award for their research into the usage of iron powder as a circular energy carrier.
