Although rankings do not tell the whole story of how well a university is performing, they do give a picture of how our University scores on various aspects of academic education, research and valorisation.
Different rankings have their own specific focus and choose indicators which, in their view, reflect the performance of a university.
The University of Twente (UT) has taken a top position in various global and national rankings. For instance, the Times Higher Education (THE) ranks us among the top 300 universities worldwide. Below is an overview of leading rankings that include UT.
ARWU Shanghai Ranking
ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.

CWTS Leiden ranking
The CWTS Leiden Ranking measures the scientific performance of 500 major universities worldwide. Using a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators, the ranking aims to provide highly accurate measurements of the scientific impact of universities and of the involvement of universities in scientific collaboration. Compared with other university rankings, the Leiden Ranking offers more advanced indicators of scientific impact and collaboration and uses a more transparent methodology. The Leiden Ranking does not rely on subjective data obtained from reputational surveys or on data provided by universities themselves.

Elsevier Beste Studies
EW Beste Studies has helped students choose a study since 1994. With independent comparisons and rankings, student opinions, facts about colleges and universities and high-quality information on the job market. In 2022, Elsevier lists the University of Twente as the best technical university, with the highest proportion of gold medals. Three out of 51 study programmes score the highest rating: the Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management, Public Administration, and the Bachelor's in Applied Physics.
Times Higher Education Rankings
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) are powered by Thomson Reuters. This global ranking assesses 1,904 universities from 108 countries based on five performance indicators: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

Times Higher Education Impact Rankings
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess 873 universities from 87 countries/regions against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UT achieves the first position on SDG 9 - industry, innovation and infrastructure measuring universities' research into industry and innovation, their number of patents and spin-off companies and their research income from industry.

World University Ranking by subject: social sciences
This ranking uses the same trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields: communication and media studies, politics and international studies (including development studies), sociology and geography.

QS world university rankings
The QS World University Rankings currently follows about 1,600 universities worldwide. In the ranking of 2024, UT is positioned in the first 20% range. Part of the ranking is based on hard data (faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, proportion of international students by faculty). Another important part is based on data obtained from two large global surveys – one among academics and another among employers (academic reputation, employer reputation).
