Finishing up and looking ahead Tim Brinkman

Tim Brinkman is a member of the Class of 2018, with a major interest in entrepreneurship. His bachelor assignment combined what he learned in ATLAS, and his passion for business and data science.

Tim chose ATLAS to combine different technologies and innovations with a business approach. He not only wants to learn to be an entrepreneur, but also to understand the technology to its fullest. He experienced ATLAS as an intense program: “It is not a 9-to-5 study, instead you can plan everything yourself. I learned to schedule and set priorities, and I know exactly why I want to learn something. I found my focus, while still keeping my enthusiasm for different subjects.”

A bachelor assignment is the final project to show what you learned during your time at University College Twente. It combines your broad background with a preparation for the master of your choice. Specifically, Tim is looking into the food sector, where he analyzes the supply chain of pears. His aim is to make the supply chain data-driven, by analyzing which data is generated by each player and how this data could be used by other players in the supply chain to make it more efficient and to create feedback loops.

The bachelor assignment is the signature of your ATLAS career

“I don’t want to become a programmer, instead I want to use data as a tool to improve companies. I started the project for my bachelor assignment by myself. Firstly, I found a supervisor that could guide me through the process. Secondly, I looked around for opportunities to learn about supply chains in the food sector. Eventually, I found a workshop week about the food sector, organized in Iceland. I applied and was admitted to work on case studies about the marine food sector. I used this week to familiarize myself with the topic, but also to get in touch with experts, even from Cambridge University.”

Tim has visited all companies involved in the production of fresh pears. He collected information from farmers, packaging companies, distribution offices, and the supermarkets. “I talked to the companies to find out what data they have and how they use it. Then I asked them what other information they would like to have. Now I am in the analysis phase and connecting the dots to increase data transfer between all players.”

“The bachelor assignment is the signature of your ATLAS career. It allowed me to bring everything I have learned the past three years together and to show that I can apply this knowledge in real life. My goal is to create more clarity about the food sector and to show opportunities for collaborations between companies.” Tim will continue with a master from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology in Data Science which combines data science, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This is a joint master program with specializations at highly valued institutes. Tim will attend Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in his first year and then specialize at the Technische Universität Berlin (Germany) in the design, implementation, and usage of data science instruments.
