Alumni join in! Batavierenrace 2018

The Batavierenrace 2018 was a big success. University College Twente was not only represented by members of Study Association Atlantis, but also by an alumni team, composed of members of the Class of 2016, Class of 2017, several current students, and friends to complete the team.

The Batavierenrace is a relay race for students from Nijmegen to Enschede. A total of 25 stages varying in length from 3.6 to 10.7 km must be completed, of which the first takes place in the city centre of Nijmegen and the last two are from the city centre of Enschede to the campus of the University of Twente. Runners are accompanied by a cyclist for safety and after each stage, the team meets to switch runners. The race is divided into three shifts: night, morning and afternoon. Within each shift, teams use a minivan to go to the following meeting point, where the runners can switch.

The alumni team did not have many runners to choose from, so they had to ask some extra help from friends and current ATLAS students. The organization of the team was mainly based on previous experience; almost all team members had joined the Batavierenrace before. After the race, all team members gathered for a dinner, where heroic stories about the race could be shared. It was also a great way to catch up with fellow ATLAS alumni and students who now all study in different cities, varying from Amsterdam, to Delft, Nijmegen, Enschede and even Leuven.

The Atlantis team was in the race to become the best study association of the University of Twente like last year. Unfortunately, the study association of Applied Physics was ten minutes faster, but this is only a reason to be faster next year. Atlantis ended at a nice 85th place, while the alumni team ended 148th out of 307 finishing teams.

After the dinner, team members joined the largest student party in the Netherlands, a great way to end an amazing weekend together with 10,000 students from all over the country and even abroad.
