Culture and Sports in the ATLAS Community The Batavierenrace and the UCSRN Tournament

Studying at University College Twente is not just about growing academically and gaining new knowledge. In fact, UCT is much more than that. Even though studying is important, many students also participate in extracurricular activities through our study association Atlantis. Two of these activities include the yearly Batavierenrace and the UCSRN tournament.

The Batavierenrace is a relay race for students from Nijmegen to Enschede. Each team exists of 25 students that run a part of the 175-km long race. The students of UCT have participated in the Batavierenrace every year not just resulting in individual accomplishments, but foremost showing teamwork.

The first year, there were barely enough students to participate in the race, and even teachers, friends and housemates joined to make it a success. The following editions, the team could be composed of only UCT students and this has also considerably improved the team performance. This year and last year, the study association of UCT, SA Atlantis, was the fastest study association of the University of Twente. After finishing the race, the accomplishments are celebrated at the largest student party of Europe, at the campus of the University of Twente.

Practising for, running in and celebrating after the longest relay run in the world with a team of fellow ATLAS students was an amazing experience, and I'd do it again without second thoughts.

The UCSRN tournament is a sports and cultural tournament for all University Colleges (UCs) in the Netherlands. Each year, every UC forms a team that participates in activities like soccer, basketball, tennis, debating, chess and dancing. As UCT is still too small to find enough participants, a team is formed together with University College Groningen.

The tournament not only promotes some healthy competition between the UCs, but also aims for coherence among all students. This year, UCT participated for the second time and even though the results were not always the best, it again was an amazing experience to be part of such a large student community.

Second-year student Rob Verbeek is a committee member of the national UCSRN association and says the following about being a member of this network. "The University College Student Representatives the Netherlands (UCSRN) is the student umbrella organisation of all University Colleges. The focus of the UCSRN is to provide integration between UC students and to make the concept of University College more well known, both inside and outside the Netherlands."

Being part of the UCSRN allows us to be represented on behalf of all eight University Colleges in the Netherlands, and gives us great social events such as the annual tournament!
