ATLAS Semester 3 Project

After working with the themes Human Movement and Systems of Sustainable Energy in their first year, this past semester the Class of 2018 focused on Living at Extreme Conditions. The semester project that was connected to this theme showed students the ins-and-outs of writing an academic research proposal. Not only did this give a good introduction to an important practical part of academic work, it also gave the students room for creativity and their own academic interests.

The resulting differences very clearly showed between the research proposals, but also within them. Since the semester had a strong focus on interdisciplinary work, the project was set up to further encourage this factor; students paired up based on research disciplines, after which these pairs were combined to form groups of six. These final groups were therefore always interdisciplinary, but also still connected through a collective research topic.

For example, Martijn worked on mathematical optimization, while other group members studied operations strategy and sustainable technologies. His research concerned “Optimizing the Scan Time of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Equipped with Ultra-Wideband Radar in Post-Disaster Scenarios”. In another group, Tristan worked on genetic engineering, alongside AI and precision agriculture and databases in genetic analysis. His topic was “Automation of Construction of CRISPR/Cas9 Enzymatic Constructs for Genetic Engineering”.

As can be seen from these descriptions, apart from coming up with long, formal research topics, students also had the opportunity to really delve into a research area of choice. Combined, these topics gave interdisciplinary solutions to problems in an even more varied way than was possible in past semesters.
