Sustainable Oceans Lectures part 2: 1/2: Dr. Clovis Freire Sustainable emerging technologies and innovation: taking advantage of windows of opportunity to break into global markets

THIS TALK IS PART OF A second SEt OF LECTURES FROM AN INTERNATIONAL GROUP OF EXPERTS FROM INDUSTRY AND RESEARCH ON SUSTAINABLE OCEANS. THESE EXPERTS ARE SUPPORTING OUR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS IN THE EXPLORATION OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN MARINE BIOTECHNOLOGY, MARITIME TRANSPORTATION AND OCEAN-RENEWABLE ENERGIES.  DR. Clovis Freire will tell us about sustainable emerging technologies and innovation.

Dr. Clovis Freire is an Economist and Computer Engineer who specialized in the economics of innovation and technological change. He works at the Division on Technology and Logistics of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), supporting the use of science, technology and innovation for structural transformation and the achievement of sustainable development goals. He is the coordinator and lead-author of UNCTAD’s Technology and Innovation Report 2021 - Catching technological waves:  Innovation with equity.

Sustainable emerging technologies and innovation: taking advantage of windows of opportunity to break into global markets

Emerging technologies have great potential to facilitate the transitions towards inclusive and sustainable development. There are countless examples of the application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robots, drones, and renewable energy technologies to address environmental, social, and economic challenges. However, few of them go beyond a pilot stage and reach a broader market. The lecture will discuss some of the challenges of entering new technologies on global markets and how the technological revolution of digitalization and Industry 4.0 could provide windows of opportunities for innovations in marine biotechnology, maritime transportation, and ocean energy. The lecture will also cover the role of international institutions such as UNCTAD, and mechanisms such as the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and the United Nations Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) in facilitating innovations that apply frontier technologies to accelerate the progress towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
