With a double degree, you combine Applied Physics with Chemical Science & Engineering or Applied Mathematics.

Looking for an extra challenge? Are you well organised, good at planning and keen to work across disciplines? Then combine the Bachelor’s in Applied Physics with our Bachelor’s in Chemical Science & Engineering or Applied Mathematics. The double degree programme includes around one-third additional coursework, allowing you to earn two degrees in the same amount of time as the regular Bachelor’s programme.

By combining your knowledge of applied physics with insights from the chemical sciences, you will be able to understand and influence complex systems at the molecular level. This opens the door to a wide range of applications, from developing advanced materials and nanotechnology to designing sustainable chemical processes and innovative energy solutions.

Structure

Structure

The double degreeĀ Applied Physics and Chemical Science & Engineering consists of courses in physics, chemistry and mathematics. Like the regular Applied Physics programme, it takes three years to complete, but includes around one-third more coursework. Upon completion, you will receive a Bachelor’s degree in both Applied Physics and Chemical Science & Engineering.

The programme is designed to give you a good understanding of both programmes from the very first semester. This allows you to quickly discover whether the pace of study suits you and whether you have the planning skills needed to manage the workload. Each quarter includes around one-third more courses than the regular programme.

In the first quarter, you will take the physics course Dynamics and Relativity, the chemistry course Fundamentals of Chemistry, and the mathematics course Calculus I. You will also develop essential laboratory skills, programming skills and data-processing skills from the very start.

In the second quarter, the focus shifts to thermodynamics and process engineering. You will continue developing your chemical and physical laboratory techniques, as well as your programming and data-processing skills. In Calculus II, you will learn the mathematics that support the courses during this quarter.

Double degree programme with Applied Mathematics

Explore two essential disciplines with our double degree programme in Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. This unique programme allows you to delve deeper into both the principles of physics and the application of mathematics in technology.

By combining these two fields, you will develop a broad and strong foundation for tackling complex technical challenges and creating innovative solutions. In Applied Physics, you will explore the fundamental principles of nature and learn how to apply them to technological challenges. Applied Mathematics provides you with the tools to analyse, model and solve complex problems using mathematical techniques.

By bringing these two fields together, you will not only develop in-depth technical knowledge, but also strengthen your analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Structure

First year

In your first year, you will take a combination of mathematics and physics courses. Some courses are shared between the two programmes, while others are specific to either physics or mathematics. The programme is designed to give you a good understanding of both degree programmes from the very first semester, allowing you to discover whether both fields are a good fit for you. In addition, you will take one extra course in each module to see whether you can manage the level and pace of a dual degree programme. In total, you will complete an additional 40 EC's over the three years.

In the first module, for example, you will take the shared courses Calculus I and Programming and Data Processing I. You will also take the physics course Dynamics & Relativity. An essential part of this course is the practical, where you will learn how to conduct experiments. In addition, you will take the mathematics course Linear Structures.

In the second module, you will again take two shared courses: Calculus II and Programming and Data Processing II. The physics course in this module is Thermodynamics. The mathematics courses Linear Structures II, Analysis and Linear Optimisation focus on mathematical proof.

Second year

In the second year you will also take a combination of mathematics and physics courses.

Third year

In the third year, you will have considerable freedom to shape your programme. The first module is an elective module, allowing you to choose what you would like to study. In the second module, you can choose from a range of mathematics and physics courses, with at least one course from each discipline. The final semester is dedicated to your assignment project.

Admission

To be admitted to one of the double Bachelor’s programmes, you need a minimum final VWO grade of 7 in both mathematics and physics. For the dual degree programme with Chemical Science & Engineering, you also need a minimum final VWO grade of 7 in chemistry.
