FAQ: The new website
Why a new website?
The last update of utwente.nl is from September 2009. However, a major part of utwente.nl was a lot older. The online world is changing in a rapid speed, nowadays visitors often visit the website via a mobile or tablet device. The current homepage is developed in a time when the iPad did not exist and Android was an unfamiliar face on the market. Thus the current homepage is not available in a mobile version. Besides that we are developing improvements concerning navigation and the findability of information.
What are the most important improvements with respect to the old website?
- A new look & feel.
- New functionalities, technological innovations and developments.
- A responsive design, usable on mobile devices, tablets and desktops.
- A clear navigation structure with an evident crumb trail.
- A better rendering of pictures and videos.
- A new database for all the study related information usable on multiple platforms, both online and offline as well as internal and external websites.
- A context dependent footer.
- Search engine optimization (SEO).
Why are only some pages in the new style and when does the rest of the website get the new look?
The complete utwente domain exist out of a corporate website, a separate bachelor and master site and 600 individual websites. We work in stages, due to the size. It started with the sites for prospective students; Professional Learning & Development, the bachelor studies and the master studies. After these websites we follow with a project for the corporate website and the remaining underlying templates. The colors of the site change every visit, why is that?
The color palette of the University of Twente's corporate identity is very divergent. We divined five color schemes, in order to optimize the possibilities of the color palette and to give the website a dynamic look. These five schemes are related to the crowededness of the campus. When the campus gets more busy the colors change to a warmer tint, when is gets less busy more cooler tints will appear.
Who developed and build the website?
The project started at the Marketing & Communication department of the University of Twente. To comprehend all the wishes concerning the functionalities and the new look & feel, the UT hires the design agency TriMM. The technical implementations are provided by B-lex, a spin-off company from our University. Various alumni of the UT work at both TriMM and B-lex.
Will there be a training about the new possibilities of the website?
If you have your own website within the utwente domain, new possibilities will be created with the new template. To get to know these possibilities and to get to know the applications of the new widgets, the project group will provide a guide in which all the possibilities will be explained step by step. The frequently given WebHare-courses will be adjusted and extended with the new possibilities.
When my site is going to be transferred to the new site, will this provide me additional work?
One of the components of the project group is to guide the transformation of all websites. We won't transfer a website to the new style without properly testing the site and overseeing where potential problems might occur. We would like to automate as much processes as possible and provide help to limit the workload of the admin.
The website consists of so called widgets. What is a widget?
The new website consists of various building blocks. There is a content block in which the main information is provided. You can place widgets around the content block . A widget can have different functionalities. For example, a photo widget, video widget, vacancy widget, quote widget, information widget and a contact widget. This build-up gives the possibility to add new functionalities in the future without interfering the design of the website. The use of widgets makes it easy to show the website on smaller screens like tablets and smartphones.
What do these changes mean for my website?
Your site will be provided with the new design. In Webhare we make the transition of using word documents to an online text editor, so it will be easier to adjust documents online. Besides, by using widgets, it will be very easy to make your website look good within a couple of minutes and to show the offer of education, research, a department or your particular service. We are also developing a central news- and events application, in which you can easily take over news posts from other UT-sites for your own site and there will be an overview page of all news- and events posts.

Is there information available about the project?
Every month the project group will give an update about the status and new developments in the UT-newsmail. Besides that, you can follow the project via www.utwente.nl/website (intranet & Dutch only).
In what way did people from the UT think along?
The project group is not alone. The whole UT is invited to think along and give feedback during the project. This resulted in various meetings per section (research, education, collaboration, organization) with stakeholders from different departments, two sessions with a sounding board, two sessions with WebHare-users and provided feedback from UT-employers.
