Admission requirements

What are the language requirements of the University of Twente?

Students applying for an English- or Dutch-taught UT programme are required to demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction. Different bachelor's and master's language requirements apply, and any applicable exemptions are listed on the respective websites. No other exemptions will be granted.

For bachelor's programmes: you must submit the required and sufficient language test result as soon as possible before the final deficiency deadline.

For master's programmes: you must meet the language requirements by the application deadline. We cannot process your application without a valid language certificate.

Please note: that the requirements for applying for fellowships may vary depending on the regulations of the fellowship provider.

What are the admission requirements of the University of Twente?

There are different bachelor's and master's admission requirements, depending on the programme of your choice and your previous educational background.

General questions about admission

You can arrange your application for one of the bachelor's or master's programmes via Studielink. When registered with Studielink, you are also registered with DUO. UT uses different deadlines (bachelor / master) for application, depending on the programme of your choice, nationality and previous education.

How can I apply for a bachelor's or (pre-)master's programme?

Pre-master's programmes

If you are not directly admissible to a master’s programme, a pre-master’s programme might be a possibility for you, as some master’s programmes offer a pre-master’s programme. Please check whether the master’s programme of your choice provides a pre-master’s programme.

However, it is not possible to apply directly for a pre-master's programme. You need to apply for a master's programme of your choice through Studielink. The University of Twente will take your application under consideration and will then proceed to transfer it to a pre-master's programme in case you are not directly eligible for a master's programme. Per application, the length and the subjects one needs to follow in their pre-master’s programme are decided, which is based on your previous education.

Keep in mind, that the pre-master’s and master’s programmes have the same minimum admission requirements, concerning your minimum degree, minimum CGPA, minimum English language requirements, etc.

In some cases, you might receive a rejection of your application, please be aware this rejection is valid for both master's and pre-master's programmes. As the admission committee already reviewed your admissibility to the pre-master’s programme upon your master’s application.

If you want to follow a specific pre-master’s programme as a transfer minor during your Dutch HBO bachelor’s degree, please refer to the Kies-Op-Maat route. In all other cases, you have to apply for a master’s programme. The University of Twente will check if you are eligible for the master’s programme directly, or if you have to follow a pre-master’s programme first.

What are the (application) deadlines?
My application is “incomplete”. What do I need to do?

If your application has been considered incomplete, please check your Osiris account to find out how you can complete your application. On the landing page of your Osiris account, please click on 'Details' behind your programme application. This will lead you to the question that is insufficient. It will also show you the information we require for this specific question.

After you finished the adjustment of your application, click 'continue' and do not forget to 'submit the application'. The Admission Office will re-evaluate the new information as soon as possible.

Which documents do I need to submit?

The documents you will be asked to upload during your application will depend on your nationality, country of your education and the bachelor’s or master’s programme of your choice. Therefore, the documents you need to upload may vary depending on the above-mentioned criteria. On our website, you will find examples of the requested documents (bachelor / master).

When will I hear more?

At the University of Twente, we aim to inform you about your admissibility within two weeks after your application. This can take longer if your application is incomplete or additional information is needed to make an informed decision about your chances of success here. Should this be the case, we will contact you as soon as possible.

Please note: in most cases the result of the admissibility of bachelor's and master's programmes will take about 4-6 weeks to be announced.

Therefore, the advice is to apply on time. Especially if you want to apply for a scholarship at the University of Twente as a conditional acceptance letter is needed to submit a scholarship application. You can check the deadlines website to see when the application portal is open to apply (bachelor / master).

What is the e-check?

As a prospective student, we can give you advice about your eligibility for our master’s programmes by doing the eligibility check. This check takes about five minutes to complete and will give you an indication of your chances of being admitted to the master’s programme of your choice. The outcome of the eligibility check is a personal advice to you, and it does not mean you are admitted or rejected. After completing the eligibility check, you will receive an eligibility e-check code and the instructions needed to complete your application.

Why was my application cancelled?

Your application was most likely cancelled because a deadline has passed or you did not complete all required steps in time. For example, you may have submitted an application via Studielink but not completed it in our online application portal Osiris before the applicable deadline.

The University of Twente uses different deadlines (bachelor / master) for the application and enrolment process, depending on the programme of your choice, nationality and previous education.

You always receive an email from the University of Twente, explaining the reason for the cancellation of your application.

Please see the deferral options (bachelor / master).

I got accepted for more than one programme, what now?

If you got accepted for more than one programme, the admission is not binding. When you log in to your Osiris account, you will see the admissions for each programme appear. Once you have decided which programme you want to do, you can withdraw the other application(s) via Studielink, as long as you have not yet paid your tuition fees.

During your application you can apply for up to four study programmes or up to two numerus fixus programmes. This applies to all applications at universities in the Netherlands.

Where can I get my unconditional letter after admission?

The University of Twente does not send an unconditional admission letter. Upon official final enrolment, you can download a proof/declaration of enrolment.

I have applied for the February intake, but the application portal indicates that the academic year runs from September to August, and it only references a one-year duration. How does this work for programmes that are longer than one year?

The February intake is part of the academic year that begins in September of the preceding year and concludes in August of the following year (also if you have started per February). The confirmation email titled "Confirmation of your application for the University of Twente", after submitting your application, specifies the intake period you applied for.

Additionally, applications are processed for a duration of one year, regardless of whether the programme is two or three years long. Once you are (conditionally) admitted and officially enrolled, you will need to re-enrol for subsequent academic years, of which you will receive information from June onwards. This procedure is standard for all students at the University of Twente.

Please note that bachelor’s programmes do not have a February intake; this option is available only for (pre-)master’s programmes.

How do I apply/enrol for the double degree for the bachelor’s programme in Technical Computer Science and the bachelor’s programme in Applied Mathematics?

The University of Twente offers a double degree for the bachelor’s programme in Technical Computer Science and the bachelor’s programme in Applied Mathematics.

If you are interested in this double degree, make sure to apply, submit a complete application, and enrol fully for each programme separately. After you are fully enrolled, you can contact your study advisor about the possibilities.

Certified documents for enrolment

To ensure a smooth enrolment process, we kindly request certified documents from you after you have received your conditional admission letter. Why are these certified documents important? According to Dutch regulations, we have to verify your previous education to finalise your enrolment. Once you have graduated from the previous education that gives you access to your bachelor’s or master’s programme, we will need certified copies of your final documents to complete the enrolment process.

  • When to send: If you have completed your diploma/degree, please send us your certified documents. Hold off if you are still awaiting your final documents. We cannot accept temporary or predicted ones.
  • Deadline: Be sure to send us the certified documents before your study intake moment: 1 September or 1 February.
  • How to send: If your documents have an online verification option (such as a link or code) or can be verified through an online verification portal, you can send us digital copies by email. Alternatively, you may ask your educational institution to send your certified documents directly to us by email. If certified photocopies are required, these cannot be submitted as email attachments. Please check the provided instructions for information on how to submit them.
  • No originals: We care about your documents' safety. Please do not send us your original documents. Once we receive them, they become UT's property, and we won't be able to return them.
Which documents are required?

Please only send certified documents after you have received a conditional admission offer:

  • For bachelor applicants: the requested certified documents are mentioned on your conditional acceptance letter, which you will only receive after your admissibility.
  • For master applicants: the instructions regarding certified documents are stated in your conditional acceptance email, which you will receive only after your admissibility. The requested documents can also be found on the UT Student Services website.

If the University of Twente receives certified documents without having a conditional admission offer, the documents will not be processed.

Can my documents be verified online?

If we can verify your documents online, there is no need to send us any certified photocopies via postal mail.

There are different possibilities for online verification:

  • Online verification method on the document. If your document include an online verification option like a website or QR code printed on it, we can sometimes verify your documents online. If this is the case for your documents, you can send us your documents via email.
  • Independent academic verification platforms. In some countries you can use verification platforms to share your documents with us digitally.
Can my current/former educational institution send UT my documents?

Yes, you may ask the educational institution where you obtained your degree to send us your certified documents either digitally or by post.

Digital copies can be emailed directly by an authorised staff member. We only accept documents this way if they are sent from an institutional email address. Also, your full name and UT student number should be included in the subject.

Documents sent by post should be enclosed in a sealed envelope bearing the official stamp or seal of the issuing institution.

What are certified photocopies?

A certified photocopy is a copy of the original document with an original 'wet' stamp, a handwritten signature, and a date on every page, placed by a notary or an authorised staff member of the educational institution that issued the document. By stamping and signing the certified photocopy, the authority confirms that it has examined and approved the original document.

The conditions of a certified photocopy are:

  1. The certified photocopy must show all details of the primary document.
  2. The certified photocopy must have readable text, visible images, and the full size of the paper.
  3. Contain all pages, front, and back of each page in the correct order of the primary document;
  4. Each page needs an official 'wet' stamp and an official handwritten original signature from the endorsing authority. The official original stamp and official handwritten original signature can be from a notary or the educational institute that issued the document.

There are three options to get your photocopies certified:

  1. Your previous educational institution. Normally you can request a certified photocopy from the authority who provided you with the original document.
  2. Notary. You can request a certified photocopy from a recognized notary, a notarized document includes a notary stamp/certificate.
  3. The Student Service Desk from the University of Twente can provide certification as a service for you. You will be asked to provide your original documents (diploma and transcript of records), regular photocopies of the documents, and your ID card/passport, after which certified copies will be made free of charge. Be aware Student Services will not make any regular photocopies. Regular photocopies can be made at the Xerox Service Point (Carré building).

Once an authorized person has correctly stamped and signed the document copies by hand, they are considered certified photocopies. The authorized person must provide these documents to you as original hard copies, and these original certified hard copies must be submitted to the University of Twente.

If the authorized person stamps and signs the documents by hand, then scans and sends them to you electronically, they will not be accepted, as scanned versions are considered regular copies. Similarly, if you receive the original certified hard copies and then make your own scans or photocopies, those copies will also not be accepted, as they are considered regular copies.

In summary, the University of Twente requires the original hard-copy certified photocopies.

Do my documents need to be translated, and if so, who is allowed to do this?

If your documents are issued in a language that does not use Latin script, you must also submit an official translation in English or Dutch.

If your document is issued in a language that uses Latin script but its content is unclear, we may still ask you to provide an official translation into English or Dutch. If this applies to your documents, we will notify you.

Some institutions provide the document(s) in both their original language and in English. In this case, we need to verify both versions (original language and English) of the documents.

If your institution does not provide the translation, it must be carried out by a professional sworn translator or a certified translation agency. The translated documents must include an original stamp, an original handwritten signature, and a date on each page, placed by the translator or agency. We accept digital copies of translations sent to us via email.

Where can I send/hand in my certified photocopies?

If we are unable to verify your documents digitally, you will be required to submit certified photocopies. Please note that certified photocopies cannot be submitted by email.

To avoid delays in the verification process, we recommend sending your certified photocopies by post to:

University of Twente
Student Services - Admission
Drienerlolaan 5
7522 NB Enschede
The Netherlands
+3153 489 2124*
* If a phone number is required

You can also hand in these certified photocopies in person upon arrival in Enschede. In that case, you can hand in your certified photocopies at the desk of Student Services (Contact Centre - Boerderij) see this location, building number 42. However, know you are not officially enrolled until the requested documents are provided.

Some programmes offered by the university are taught at another location (VU Amsterdam). However, the University of Twente arranges the application, registration, and enrolment. This means that the certified photocopies need to be provided at the University of Twente in Enschede (not at the other locations).

I have sent/handed in my documents. How do I know that you received them?

As soon as the University of Twente has processed your documents, you will be informed via email. Be aware that it could take a couple of days between receiving and processing the documents, especially during peek periods close to the enrolment deadline.

This takes time because the documents will be first received at the central post office of the University of Twente. Then after, it will be distributed to our department. The admission office will receive the documents and need to process the received documents accordingly. Once the documents are fully reviewed and processed, you will be informed. We thank you for your understanding.

Since we need to process the certified photocopies of every new student arriving in the summer, it can take up to one week to process your documents. If you have not heard anything after two weeks, once we have received them, please contact us.

What is a graduation statement?

When you have finished your diploma/degree, but you still have to wait on the official degree certificate, you can send in a graduation statement. A graduation statement may also be known as a provisional or temporary certificate.

A graduation statement is an original letter on official stationery, issued after you have officially graduated, that contains at least the following information:

  • Full name and date of birth of the graduate
  • Obtained title and study programme
  • Official graduation date (please note that this date should be before the start of the academic year/intake moment)
  • Signature and title of the authorized person of the graduate institute

We do not accept a graduation statement with a graduation date in the future. For example, “student Adam Smith is in his final semester and will be graduating on 22 July 2026” with the issue date of 1 June 2026.

UT graduation statement template

You may also ask the institution where you obtained your degree to complete the UT Proof of Graduation template and have them send it directly to us.
