Aneurysm rupture in the abdominal aorta is typically lethal. Based on current clinical guidelines, patients with an aneurysm wider than 5.5 cm are considered for elective repair. Such an elective procedure  using open surgery or endovascular repair may avert rupture, but this treatment is not without risks and may in some cases be unnecessary.
