Open Talks: AI ethics - current issues and perspectives

A space for reflection, dialogue and open exchange of ideas

Open Talks offers an open and non-judgmental space for reflection and discussion on key social transformations of our time. Each session invites researchers, students and citizens to think together about how digitalisation, mobility and technology reshape our societies and daily lives.

The initiative is organised by the Social Science Sector Plan teams Societal Transitions and Behaviour Change (STaB) and Human Factors in New Technology (HINT).

THIS SESSION

Concrete measures to operationalise AI ethics principles and tensions

Ten use cases across different industrial sectors have been studied in the AIOLIA project. We gained important insights into AI ethics principles, specifically their interlinkages and contextual components. Our findings align well with the overarching HLEG ALTAI framework, but also show important deviations. The status and meaning of ethics principles may be much more fluid in actual design practice than in the abstract AI ethics frameworks.

We have also elicited and narrativised many tensions between principles. The core of AIOLIA findings is a portfolio of technical and organisational measures to implement each principle and address trade-offs. Based on these empirical measures, AIOLIA is now building pedagogical materials and offering pilot training sessions in AI ethics.

Dr Alexei Grinbaum
Ph.D., HDR, is a physicist and philosopher at LARSIM, the Philosophy of Science Group at CEA-Saclay near Paris. His main interest is in the foundations of quantum theory. He also writes on the ethical and social aspects of emerging technologies, including nanotechnology, synthetic biology, robotics and artificial intelligence. Grinbaum is the chair of the CEA operational ethics committee for digital technologies. He contributed to several EU projects (observatoryNano, RRI-Practice, TechEthos, iRECS, MultiRATE) and serves as ethics expert to the European Commission. His books include "Mécanique des étreintes" (2014) and "Les robots et le mal" (2019).

Dr. Luca M. Possati, Assistant Professor in Human-Technology Relations, University of Twente

Luca M. Possati is an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Trained as a philosopher, he has held positions at the Delft University of Technology, the University of Porto, and the Institut Catholique de Paris. He is the author of Design for Entropy (MIT Press, 2026).
