DSI Meet-up: AI Chatbots in Education Lessons from the BuddyGPT Project

Exploring how conversational AI can support learning

AI-based conversational agents hold significant promise for transforming educational processes. They offer new opportunities for personalisation and student support, yet there remains a lack of empirical research into how learners and educators perceive their benefits, concerns and design implications. Moreover, the use of such systems is often not well grounded in established educational theories.

Within the BuddyGPT project, researchers at the University of Twente examined these questions by studying perceptions among graduate and undergraduate students, researchers and educators. The project explored both the potential advantages and the challenges of integrating AI chatbots into education. The findings informed key design considerations for implementing AI-driven chatbots. They contributed to the co-creation of an AI-based “buddy system” within the Canvas learning management system, developed to support students throughout their academic journey.

This DSI Meet-up will share insights from the project and open the floor for discussion on how conversational AI can strengthen learning environments in a responsible and human-centred way.
