The Twente Robotics Symposium is a low barrier event mainly to get to know other robotics or robotics related researchers of University of Twente. For this 3rd symposium we have the pleasure to announce keynote speaker prof. Dr. Marco Hutter (ETH Zürich).

Keynote speaker MarCo hutter

Marco is an assistant professor for robotic systems at ETH Zürich, a Branco Weiss fellow, and founder of ANYbotics AG. He studied mechanical engineering and completed his doctoral degree in robotics at ETH. Marco’s research interests are in the development of novel machines and actuation concepts together with the underlying control, planning, and learning algorithms for locomotion and manipulation. His research group and the spin-off company are participating in several research projects, industrial collaborations, and competitions that target the application of autonomous, mostly legged robots like ANYmal in challenging environments for search and rescue, industrial inspection, space exploration, forestry or construction operation.

Legged robots in action

Recent progress in the development of legged robots and their intelligence has led to systems that are skilled and mature enough for real-world deployment. In particular quadrupedal robots have reached a level of mobility to navigate complex environments, which enables them to take over inspection or surveillance jobs in place like offshore industrial plants, in underground areas, or on construction sites. In this talk, I will present our research work with the quadrupedal robot ANYmal and explain some of the underlying technologies for locomotion control, environment perception, and mission autonomy. I will show how this robot can learn and plan complex locomotion manoeuvres, how it can navigate through challenging environments and how it is able to conduct surveillance and inspection tasks with super-human precision.
