On 30 June, the final day of Pride Month, we raise the rainbow-inclusion flag as a powerful symbol of visibility, diversity, and equal rights for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or background. Pride has its roots in protest and reminds us that acceptance and equal treatment are never self-evident. It requires ongoing attention and commitment.
On 1 July, during Keti Koti, we mark the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands and reflect on a history of oppression and inequality, as well as its lasting impact on the present. At the same time, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the continued pursuit of justice.
At the University of Twente, we recognize that these themes are closely interconnected. Inclusion and equity are not abstract ideals, but also call for concrete action in our education, research, and everyday practice. By bringing these moments together, we emphasize our shared responsibility to contribute to a just and inclusive society.
As an academic community, we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to actively embed these values in what we study, what we teach, and how we collaborate with one another. In doing so, we work together to create an environment where everyone’s identity is respected, differences are valued, and everyone feels free to express themselves within our vibrant community where it is safe to be who we are.
Wondering how you can contribute to our UT community?
Reflect on your own role, stay open to different perspectives, and take active steps to foster inclusion in your work, study, and collaborations. You can also further develop your awareness and practical skills by following the DE&I e-learning and help strengthen an inclusive culture across our university. Lastly, please check out our Th!nk with Pride network and stay up to date on our UT DE&I website
