Cradle to cradle shopping bag design for the island of Sylt

A while ago I designed a shopping bag for the course Cradle to Cradle I. As everyone was quite enthusiastic about the design, I decided to enter in it in a design competition, which to my own surprise I won. To make a long story short, I am no working together with an organisation that aims to reduce the plastic use on the West Frisian Islands, and we are trying to bring the bags onto the market.

The bags are designed in such a way that they are fully biodegradable and do not contain any glue or ink. Trowing it away will actually benefit the environment instead of polluting it as it provides biological nutrients or the ecosystem.

To show that the bags can have just as much detail on them as bags that are printed I created a test pattern. This graphic, which is inspired by the shapes found on a sea-snail’s shell was cut into the bags with the lasercutting machine from the Designlab. Thanks again to Andrea who helped me with the lasercutting machine, it would have been a nightmare to cut the bags by hand.
