Creating your own business The Ghostcard

In this module of the IEM and BIT program our project demanded us to come up with the idea for a product and then build a business around it. The product we came up with is called the Ghostcard. The Ghostcard is a card that has the same size as a bank card. People can place tools on the card via a web-based application, so that someone could create a card with the exact tools that he or she often uses. The selection of tools one can choose from is very broad, such as different beauty tools, a bottle openers and a saw. There are 2 materials that one could choose from, namely stainless steel and perspex. It makes sense that the beauty tools are more suited for the perspex card and that the practical tools are more suited for the stainless steel variant.

Of course, a prototype of the product had to be made. We decided to make one card with practical tools of stainless steel and one card with beauty tools from perspex. The card from perspex was made with the lasercutter in DesignLab. The card from stainless steel was made with the lasercutter in the Westhorst. Before the real prototypes were made, some tryouts with wood were done in the DesignLab. The advantage of the lasercutter in the DesignLab is that it can engrave and cut in one go, whereas the lasercutter from the Westhorst wasn’t able to do this. Yet, the lasercutter from DesignLab required some additional steps before the lasercutter would be able to read the document. In CorelDraw some additional modifying was done, often with the help of Andrea. The result from the lasercutting  can be found in the images underneath.
