Jeroen van der Ham-de Vos receives Runner-Up prize in Dutch Cybersecurity Research Paper Award

We are proud to share that a paper co-authord by DACS member Jeroen van der Ham-de Vos has been awarded the Runner-Up prize in the Dutch Cybersecurity Research Paper Award. The paper “Operationalizing cybersecurity research ethics review: from principles and guidelines to practice“ by Dennis Reidsma (HMI), Jeroen van der Ham-de Vos (DACS) and Andrea Continella (SCS) was published at the 2nd International Workshop on Ethics in Computer Security 2023.

 An excerpt from the jury report:
"This paper tackles an important problem: the unintended consequences of cybersecurity research, which are frequently discovered only after serious harm has already occurred and is difficult or impossible to reverse. By clearly identifying a realistic and comprehensive list of risks—ranging from accidental privacy breaches to the mishandling of newly discovered vulnerabilities—the paper provide a valuable framework that, if widely adopted, could prevent significant damage before it happens. Because the proposed guidelines are broadly applicable, their impact extends well beyond academia. These contributions could meaningfully improve ethical standards not only in university research labs but also in industry settings where new cybersecurity tools and technologies are developed."
