Logging in for different applications will change the upcoming weeks

Over the next few weeks, the University of Twente will start to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) which will add more security then passwords alone. This means that we add an extra verification step to ensure that your data is better protected.

Why Multi-factor authentication?

Security management of the University of Twente periodically evaluates the way users get authenticated to IT resources and implements improvements if necessary. As a result of measures we have to take for the ever-increasing cyber threats and privacy protection, it has been decided, in consultation with the organisation, to introduce Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

What does that mean to you?

You will need to install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone, which is used next to your username and password on your computer. The app is used as an extra verification step for Office365, Planon, the Selfservice Portal and MyHR (AFAS). Other applications will also be added in 2021.

If you don’t have a UT smartphone or you don’t want to use your private smartphone for the MFA then it is possible to purchase a low-budget smartphone via the LISA self-service portal at the expense of the faculty/service department.

How do I configure the Microsoft Authenticator App?

One day before MFA is enabled, you have to install the Microsoft Authenticator app and sign up for MFA. You will receive an email with instructions. The schedule below shows when your service department or faculty will switch to MFA.
