Sports photography Marcel ter Bals

Marcel ter Bals, manager of the UT swimming facilities, has only been taking photographs for three years, but this year already, he and nine other photographers were nominated for the silver camera in the sports photography category. He was nominated for a series of photos that he took during the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool last year.

Three years ago, Marcel ter Bals was still a water polo coach. He was active in that world for more than 30 years. Among other things, as assistant national coach for “Oranje” and national coach for Germany. However, when he passed the 50 he was ready for something new, he says. Photography had been his interest for some time and the emotions, disappointments and joy that are visible and palpable with athletes and supporters, that was nothing new for him. Only the technique of photography, there was still something to learn. therefore he followed a short course at the photography school in Apeldoorn and subsequently became a regular photographer at Heracles Almelo and a freelance photographer for the “Twentse Courant Tubantia”.

A selection of his photo work can be seen in the small exhibition room of the Vrijhof.

The opening in presence of Marcel ter Bals will take place on Thursday 12 September at 16.30.
