Course 2a: Practical teaching skills 2026/2027 | UTQ

    All academic staff (whether permanent or temporary, part-time or fulltime) with UFO profile HGL, UHD, UD, Teacher.


    PhD's:

    The UTQ courses, 2a: Practical Teaching Skills, and 2b: Supervising Students are alternatives to the Taste of Teaching course. You may take one or both of these courses instead of the Taste of Teaching course. For these courses, you will receive a partial UTQ certificate. To be eligible for a certificate, you must meet the following criteria:


    Course 2a: You have active teaching responsibilities. As part of the assessment, one of your lectures will be observed, you must have delivered several lectures before this observation takes place.

    Course 2b: You must supervise at least two BA and/or MA students.

    Several times a year.

  • Time

    5 face to face sessions of 3 hours.
    Self-study assignments: 3 hours per session.

    You will get access to a Canvas site offering all the necessary content in a modular setting.

  • Requirements

    Before taking any of the UTQ courses, please arrange an initial meeting with your faculty's UTQ supervisor. You can find the name of your faculty's UTQ supervisor here: Expert at CELT.


    PhD's who started their PhD before 1st of March 2026 and have already had teaching training are eligible to receive a 2EC exemption for the Taste of Teaching. Please email exemptions-tgs@utwente.nl and attach the course certificate of teaching credentials you already have.  You will be issued an exemption letter which you will upload into the Doctorate monitoring system. Candidates who started their PhD on or after 1st March 2026 and have already had teaching training will describe the training they had directly in the Doctorate monitoring system.  An exemption letter will no longer be needed.

Please note: as the title of this training already suggests emphasis is on practicing skills, through: active participation, making video recordings, doing exercises and reflection. 

Prepare an educational meeting, lesson plan, intended learning outcomes, context, materials, activating student learning, justification, conduct an educational meeting and reflect on his performance. Thorough reflection, vision on teaching and learning; giving and receiving feedback. 

ORGANISATION

Preparation: exercises and assignments, reading course material, in course: assignments (both individual and group), discussions

ADMISSION CRITERIA

The University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) is a required teaching certification for lecturers, assistants, associates, and full professors.
