Content
How do you politely tell a colleague in Dutch that you need them to send you their work? Or how do you tell your research group leader that you would rather use a different approach for your research proposal than they are suggesting?
In Dutch@Uni, you will explore ways to manipulate your tone in Dutch in a university setting.
The course consists of weekly lessons. Before each lesson, you study how to phrase requests, suggestions and positive or negative feedback differently depending on context and your relationship with others. Additionally, you submit texts in which you focus on one of these areas and apply them to situations you might encounter at work in a university.
In class, you further discuss the week’s focus area with the teacher and your classmates, before applying them in roleplays for situations you might encounter at work. Additionally, you will rework your submitted texts based on feedback you received before class, aiming to find the exact right tone for the situation.
At the end of the course, you will:
- Feel more confident about using Dutch in the context of working at a university;
- Be able to adapt your tone in Dutch depending on your relationship with others as well as other factors such as urgency and emotion.
Duration and time investment
Attendance at every lesson is essential, since a new language act is covered every week. The course consists of 9 lessons of two hours each. Homework is expected to take approximately three hours per week, including submitted texts.
Admission criteria
Admission is granted based on certificates obtained from earlier language courses, in this case, Dutch B1 and up, or an intake exam, which you can register for here.
