1 – Introduction and learning goals

Introduction

The master thesis COM (192491009) is the final (25EC) course of the master Communication Studies. During the master thesis COM the student will conduct a research project related to the one, or a combination of, the fields of study related to the master tracks within the master Communication Studies (i.e. Corporate Communication, Marketing Communication and/or Media & Communication). The master thesis COM has a study load of 25EC, corresponding with 700 hours of study.

 Learning goals of the master thesis COM

The learning goals of the master thesis COM find their origin in the practical and academic knowledge and skills of the bachelor Communication Science or Pre-master Communication Studies, combined with the in-depth knowledge and research skills of the master courses depicted in the master tracks of the master Communication Studies. From this point of view four main learning goals can be derived.

  1. The student is independently or autonomous capable of designing a research project with sufficient practical or public relevance as well as theoretical impact within the fields of study related to the master Communication Studies.
     
  2. The student is independently or autonomous capable of conducting and managing a research project in terms of the execution of desk research, field research and/or (quasi) experimental research.
     
  3. The student is independently or autonomous capable of reporting about the conducted research, based on the academic writing rules and principles related to the field of study and type or genre of the document.
     
  4. The student is capable of orally presenting the outline and key findings of the research, relating the findings to the communication practice as well as answering (non-)expert questions regarding the research.
