Master Student Arthur Nazarian graduated at CHOIR

Arthur Nazarian successfully defended his thesis and completed his master’s degree in Industrial Engineering & Management under the supervision of Dr. Derya Demirtas and Prof. Dr. Johann Hurink. The thesis was graded with a “9”.

The research proposes a prescriptive optimization method that guides the deployment of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are crucial in improving survival outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, provided that they are in close proximity. Using data from the ARREST registry of the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, the study accounts for the uncertainty of future cardiac arrests and provides a scalable method for determining possible locations for AED placement.

Arthur created heuristic optimization algorithms of varying complexity for deploying AEDs and studied the effectiveness of combining different methods and algorithms. One of the main findings is that by relocating the currently placed AEDs in 43 municipalities in the Netherlands that were included in the research, the coverage can be improved by 73.5% on average.
