Eline Tsai recently graduated and now has her master’s degree in Applied Mathematics. The title of her thesis: “Optimal time allocation of an orthopedic surgeon”. The research was conducted for the Sint Maartenkliniek in Nijmegen. The research aims at determining the optimal allocation of the outpatient department and operating room sessions throughout the year per orthopedic surgeon. The allocation of these sessions influences the OR queue length, which is a trade-off between de waiting time of the patients and the amount of unused OR time. A detailed model of the system is constructed and several methods are proposed to make the system numerically tractable. Due to the complicated structure of the system, more research is needed in approximation methods before the model is practically applicable.
