PhD candidates and UT staff with an East Asian language background* who want to improve their English intonation and pronunciation.
*Participant’s language background: Mandarin (China), Cantonese (China, Hong Kong, Macau), Indonesian, Korean, Thai, Mongolian, Vietnamese, Japanese.
Participants acquire and practice skills that will lead to clearer, more natural English pronunciation and intonation. Participants develop their pronunciation and understanding of international English in order to communicate more effectively in the workplace.
This course will allow participants to more effectively overcome communication difficulties that are specific to having an East Asian language background. You will gain insights into the particularities of your own pronunciation and which of these features may cause misunderstanding in daily communication in an English-speaking environment. In our sessions, we will focus on improving individual sounds, stress, intonation, and sentence rhythm. You will do exercises in class and at home targeting problematic areas, and acquire a set of tools that you can use to further improve pronunciation, once the course is finished. Simultaneously, you will work on recognising features of spoken English that impede your understanding, for example when attending lectures or when colleagues are talking to you. The course will also address some intercultural aspects that are relevant to communicating effectively in an English-speaking environment.

DURATION AND TIME INVESTMENT
Attendance at every lesson is essential. The course consists of 8 sessions, which are held over 15 consecutive weeks, with one session per fortnight. Each session lasts one and a half hours. Homework is expected to take approximately two hours each week. The study load for this course is roughly equivalent to 2 ECTS.
