English ESP: Professional Writing Skills

The course ‘Professional writing skills’ is offered at various CEFR-levels and intended for staff who are currently working remotely and are interested in improving their professional writing skills with the aim of improving their ease and confidence in English. The course is designed for non-native speakers of English.

RESULT

By the end of this course,

  • you will have practiced and will have started to improve your professional writing skills in English.
  • you have learnt how to write e-mails, minutes, and reports more flexibly and confidently in English.
  • you have learnt what conventions of common these genres in writing to adhere to in the future.

Please note that the course primarily focuses on the language and communication skills necessary to be able to write better (i.e. using appropriate language and adhering to genre-conventions) as well as writing more clearly and more confidently in the future.

If you are interested in reaching a higher level in all skills in English, UTLC recommends taking a Cambridge Course, which also prepares for official Cambridge Exams to be taken through assessment centres of the British Council. Such formal exams are nationally only administered through such centres.

CONTENT

In this course, you will:

  • communicate in English with others in English.
  • start recognizing the structure of common genres in writing.
  • learn how to write clearly, using appropriate language and style.
  • learn how to expand your register.
  • learn how to edit your own work.

The course offers you the insight into general genre conventions needed to be able to write more professionally. Prior to each session, you will be asked to prepare something. In this course, you will get plenty of practice opportunities to apply what you have learnt in sessions while communicating in English with others, which will allow you to develop your skills further.

DURATION AND TIME INVESTMENT

The course ‘Professional writing skills’ consists of six 2.5-hour sessions, which will be offered in a virtual classroom and will be hand-on. You will also be asked to do writing assignments and submit these assignments before you come in each session, so your output will be part of the input for the sessions.
