Popular Writing

This three-hour workshop supports participants to transform academic research into a popularised journalistic story in the form of a news article, press release or blog post. This helps with communicating research to a general audience in written form.

The focus at university is usually on academic writing skills. But, journalistic writing skills are necessary to translate scientific knowledge from your bachelor's or master's thesis into a convincing and attractive text for a news item, press release or blog post.

In this course you will learn various techniques used to present scientific knowledge and insights in a widely understandable form.  This includes learning how to: collect, select, structure and formulate complex information; and how to structure writing with a five-step writing process.

Preparation: During this workshop you will work on your own article. So think about a topic that you want to practise with. Ideally it would be your bachelor or master project, but you can choose a hobby topic. As long as you have enough background knowledge about the topic and are passionate about it!

This workshop consists of one evening session of three hours.
